The primary role of Coordinator of the Standardized Patient Program is to oversee and manage the UMKC School of Medicine (SOM) standardized patient program and all standardized patient simulations provided by the UMKC SOM’s Clinical Training Facility (CTF), which includes events at varied locations in Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri. This position will manage administrative activities necessary to sustain and grow the SP program including but not limited to: coordinating and scheduling SP educational events with CTF team and with course directors and program coordinators; hiring, firing, orienting and training SPs, managing SP related files and ensuring the program has policies and procedures in place. Includes scheduling and/or attending related administrative meetings, ensuring set-up and tear-down for SP events (IT/AV/online assessments via CAE, the simulation learning management system), ensuring direction is provided to learners, faculty, and standardized patients during exams and SP activities, performing program quality improvement. Responsible for developing curriculum to support the training of SPs in their role, and supporting special projects which related to faculty development, curriculum development, and reseaarch for health sciences students that involve the use of SPs.

Management

The coordinator directly supervises the standardized patients and is responsible for the indirect supervision of other CTF staff members such as the office support assistants and operations specialists.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Program Administration & Leadership
    • Implement strategies developed as part of the strategic plan and monitor outcomes related to the SP program.
    • Serve as liaison between UMKC SOM, and its partners and affiliates regarding their SP needs.
    • Oversee and manage SP Program staff (including SPs) in accordance with reporting structure and University policy, including but not limited to interviewing and hiring new SPs, orienting new hires, leading meetings, providing feedback, conducting performance reviews, remediating, firing, scheduling, and payroll.
      • Maintain a robust and diverse team of standardize patients.
      • Ensure appropriate SPs are assigned to SP-based UMKC SOM SP events, considering the patient characteristics necessary for each scenario; the purpose and objectives for each scenario; and the strengths, weakness, and availability of the SPs.
    • Serve as instructor-level editor on UMKC’s Standardized Patient Program Canvas page, implementing updates and educational material as applicable.
    • Support Director of Simulation Education and CTF Assistant Directors in obtaining and maintaining simulation center accreditation, specifically through management of SP Program in accordance with those guidelines.
    • Assist in planning and implementation of special projects applicable to the CTF’s mission and that of the Health Sciences District.
    • Keep up with the best practice and trends in simulation, especially SP-based simulation; may require attendance at local, regional, and national conferences.
  • Financial
    • Work with the Asst Directors to update and implement a business plan and annual budget for the SP Program.
    • Manage/approve SP payroll and program finances in coordination with UMKC SOM Business Affairs.
    • Serve as liaison with outside entities using UMKC’s standardized patients for special projects.
    • Create usage and program financial reports for the purposes of reporting program data for center strategic planning.
  • Education, Assessment, and Research
    • Support UMKC faculty in the development and implementation of SP-based simulation curricula in their respective programs, including SP training.
    • Support the development of new SP events and to continually enhancing existing/ongoing SP events.
    • Advise and assist CTF administrative and/or operations staff in troubleshooting before, during, and after events.
    • Review and evaluate the quality of SP performances and feedback and remediate SPs when necessary.
    • Maintain assessment and supporting materials for all SP exams and assist SP and sim program staff with assessment-related troubleshooting during events.
    • Provide training and continuing education (and develop related materials) for standardized patients, new hires, and staff/faculty in SP-based modalities and trends.
    • Support SP-based research studies.
  • Operations
    • Coordinate with the Asst Directors and Directors to ensure regular operational support of SP events, including support of IT and AV needs.
    • Ensure all SP events/activities are correctly created within the CAE system (this is a complex learning management system for simulation centers).
    • Develop and implement guidelines, procedures and policies necessary for efficient and quality execution of all standardized patient-related activities.
    • Assist in the identification and acquisition of necessary operational resources to ensure success for the missions of the CTF and Standardized Patient Program.
    • Ensure operations team members that provide support for SP events have the expected proficiency with operational expectations, IT and AV operations, troubleshooting/repair of necessary simulation equipment and recording equipment.
    • When necessary, serve as liaison with equipment manufacturers and University IT department regarding maintenance of equipment, hardware and software updates, and necessary changes in procedures.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Experience as a standardized patient, with demonstrated competency in role portrayal and delivery of written/verbal feedback is preferred, but not required. Prior experience working with standardized patients may be substituted.
  • Experience as an actor, director, producer, stage manager and/or casting director in theatrical/commercial/film productions is preferred, but not required.
  • Management and/or business knowledge and experience is preferred, but not required.

Salary

$16.92 - $20 per Hour commiserate with education, experience and equity.
