Job Description

The Arizona K12 Center, located in Phoenix, Arizona, provides professional learning opportunities for Arizona's K-12 teachers and is part of the College of Education at Northern Arizona University. It is seeking an experienced, dynamic leader to serve as the Program Director. While this position is primarily responsible for the development, implementation, and growth of the Arizona K12 Center's mentoring work it also intersects with other aspects of our work across the teaching continuum. It oversees program operations including budgets, development, and quality management to identify and create goals to assure the effectiveness of the program. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Programs of the Arizona K12 Center, this position plays a central role in the development and implementation of the programs of the Center, in particular, induction and mentoring.

It is expected that the Program Director will take an active role in planning and facilitating professional learning for clients and play a supporting role in advancing the learning opportunities associated with the Center's Professional Learning Plan. The person hired for this position must be comfortable speaking andfacilitating engaging learning opportunities in large groups of over 200 people as well as smaller groups of 20-30 people. It is expected that the Program Director will be strategic in thinking as the goals and vision of the Arizona K12 Center are implemented as they hold themselves and those around them to the highest standards. It is expected that the Program Director will have a deep knowledge set around the standards and research that support teachers across the continuum of practice, most notably, induction and mentoring as well as the content areas of science, technology, and/or mathematics. The person hired for his position will need to work collaboratively with all members of the Arizona K12 Center team and support the mission and goals of the Center.

The successful candidate must have a keen eye on detail and be comfortable in the use of technology, including the Arizona K12 Center's in-house studio. This includes but is not limited to event set up, ensuring website accuracy, and the ability to execute and oversee the use of the Arizona K12 Center's in- house studio. It is expected that the Program Director will meet regularly with the Assistant Director of Programs to provide updates, seek feedback, and provide insight. The person hired for this position will need to stay abreast of current trends and research in Induction and mentoring as well as science, technology, and/or mathematics while keeping others informed.

Essential Functions

Professional Development & Learning - 25%
  • Supports the mission and goals of the Arizona K12
  • Center through a programmatic focus on professional learning for Arizona's K-12 teachers spanning the teaching continuum from preservice to teacher leadership with the ubiquitous use of technology integration where appropriate.
  • Provides direction and integrative coordination in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Arizona K12 Center's multi-faceted induction program.
  • Develops professional learning opportunities for teacher leaders as well as the Arizona K12 Center's annual Camp Plug & Play.
  • Develops original professional learning opportunities in the STEM areas.
  • Stays abreast of current trends/research in professional learning, teacher leadership, and the needs of schools and teachers.

K-12 Practitioner Support - 25%
  • Supports the use and development of the Arizona K12 Center's Technology Integration Matrix (TIM).
  • Oversees and facilitates the Arizona New TeacherProgram.
  • Stays connected to K-12 teachers to seek stories of first year and leadership experiences.
  • Seeks opportunities to expand and elevate induction and mentoring opportunities throughout the state.
  • Remains current on the standards that support novice teacher support and professional learning.
  • Assists in fiscal accountability of assigned professional learning events.

Staff & Stakeholder Support - 15%
  • Work alongside staff to plan and execute professional learning opportunities.
  • Meet regularly with the Assistant Director and other program directors.
  • Collaborate with key staff and stakeholders to create meaningful connections in the work of the Center to maintain relevancy and maximize sustainability.

Data Collection & Evaluation - 10%
  • Designs meaningful measures and collects data to better understand the overall effectiveness of the Center's work.
  • Creates written reports summarizing data from assigned professional learning events.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of program management experience.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of K-12 teaching and coaching experience
  • Current AZ Teaching Certificate.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education or related field
  • National Board Certification
  • Experience in working with adult learners
  • Experience facilitating professional learning opportunities in both large and small group settings
  • Experience supporting teachers seeking National Board Certification
  • Proven ability to engage, motivate, and work with teachers, staff, and stakeholders
  • Proven ability to work independently; a self-starter with energy, humility, and enthusiasm.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of K-12 education and the standards that guide teaching practice, induction/mentoring, and professional learning.
  • Knowledge of current trends, issues, and practices around teacher leadership.
  • Knowledge of research that undergirds effective professional learning.
  • Knowledge of the standards and practices around the STEM areas.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and accounting principles.
  • Skills in developing original materials and resources to support program elements.
  • Skills in facilitation and presenting to both large (200+) and small (25-30) groups.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and coordinate multiple projects at a time while meeting all deadlines.
  • Ability to think strategically and connect various programs with an eye on the big picture and long- term goals and outcomes.

  • Experience and credibility when presenting materials to both internal and external constituents including individuals from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence, honesty, transparency, and high levels of collaboration.
  • Working knowledge of electronic mail and calendars in an Apple environment including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software such Survey Monkey and ability to run, analyze, and summarize computer-generated reports.
  • Must be able and willing to travel frequently throughout Arizona and the United States to attend relevant programs and events.
  • Must be able and willing to work some evenings, 1-2 weekends per month, and extended days during the summer months.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. Salary

Salary range is $72,445 - $90,556. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
