Early Learning Center

JOB SUMMARY:
  • Support the mission of the Adelphi University Alice Brown Early Learning Center, to develop, support and maintain authentic, meaningful relationships with the children and their families.
  • Learn and display knowledge of the theories of child growth and development, early childhood education and family support.
  • Learn, understand and demonstrate knowledge of the underlying philosophies of constructivist educational practices; including the principles and practices of Reggio Emilia Approach.
  • Promote and support children's social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical development.
  • Understand, lead and model professionalism, teamwork and a collaborative spirit within the classroom teaching team, the center and the greater Adelphi University community.
  • Assist in developing and expanding curriculum based on children's interests and needs in conjunction with developmentally appropriate best practices.
  • Foster creativity, competence, and curiosity in children. Help children to develop problem-solving skills around events which are a normal part of the everyday life at the center and at home.
  • Help organize and maintain a safe, healthy and non-punitive learning environment, in accordance with the Center's philosophy and curriculum.
  • Model and promote optimal health and safety practices, including good nutrition practices.
  • Assist children in activities of daily living, including diapering/toileting, feeding, meal service, washing etc, as necessary.
  • Select and prepare appropriate equipment, materials and activities to develop essential skills in children.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REPORTS TO: Director of the Early Learning Center

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  1. Reflect on children's needs and interests, assist in implementing topic focuses and assessing curriculum for the classroom setting.
  2. Supervise and lead children in planning, implementing and assessing developmentally appropriate curriculum in the event the teacher is not present.
  3. Ensure that the outdoor play environment is safe, clean and well organized and utilized as an extension of the classroom setting.
  4. Assist in planning and carrying out daily classroom routine that is consistent yet flexible.
  5. Assist and participate in recording and documenting children's work and progress.
  6. Maintain active two way communications with team members, parents and other ELC program personnel.
  7. Monitor and supervise and support student staff and graduate assistants employed by the program.
  8. Engage in meaningful on-going professional development opportunities; including trainings required by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, and Adelphi University.
  9. Understand and implement Child Day Care Regulations as administered by the Office of Children and Family Services.
  10. Maintain an orderly, sanitary classroom environment.
  11. Continually update knowledge of child development, early childhood curriculum, and staff development through appropriate publications, trainings, and courses.
  12. Model and maintain confidentiality in and outside of the classroom setting in regard to children, parents, staff, students and observers.
  13. Perform any other job duties and responsibilities as needed by the program.

REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, skills and abilities)
  1. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  2. A strong foundation in child development.
  3. Ability to interact in a supportive and positive manner with a diverse student body.
  4. Knowledge of the process of curriculum development for children ages 18 months through 5 years.
  5. Display ability to take initiative and act cooperatively in meeting children's needs.
  6. Understand and maintain confidentiality.
  7. Display sound decision making skills
  8. Display ability to appropriately supervise children in a group and use transition techniques to move children through the daily routine.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Possess the ability to lift 50 lbs. or more
  2. Ability to bend, stoop and move freely.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Associate degree in Early Childhood Education OR a CDA credential or NYS Infant/Toddler or Preschool Credential OR a plan of study through college coursework in specialized training in early childhood education or a related field.
  2. Experience working with children age 18 months through five years a plus.
  3. Candidate must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
