Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday; 7am - 4pm.
Some nights and weekends may be required.

General Description:

This inaugural position plans, directs, manages, and leads the overall operation for the Grounds, Athletic Fields, Custodial and Waste Diversion services in and around all residential, academic, and other facilities of the campus. This position leads a 50-person team in order to create a safe, productive, and aesthetically pleasing work environment. Participates in university sustainability planning and ensures compliance with applicable health and safety standards. Reports to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure efficient and effective operation and management of RISD Facilities custodial and grounds functions and staff by recommending and implementing operational best practices, policies, and procedures aligned with industry standards through data-driven decisions that support the department’s overall strategic priorities.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and ensures continued development of custodial and grounds supervisory/lead team, and regularly evaluate performance along with inspection of work areas to ensure satisfactory performance.
  • Identify “best practices” and programs from peer and benchmark institutions.
  • Develop, manage and analyze the Campus Services budget.
  • Negotiates and secures contracts with outside contractors and vendors, as required, to ensure operational needs are met.
  • Monitor and manage the inventory of all supplies and equipment. Investigate and test new products and equipment for maintenance, requesting purchases as appropriate.
  • Plan and supervise maintenance programs for athletic/synthetic fields, recreation facilities, and paved areas. Coordinate with departments to ensure that facilities are event-ready.
  • Develops and maintains reports to track data relevant to overall custodial and grounds operations.
  • Coordinate the planning, development, and prioritization of efficient grounds maintenance tasks and horticultural programs to assure plant health, cleanliness, and public safety are attained on a daily basis.
  • Oversight of the integrated pest management plan.
  • Work with Residential Life to coordinate the cleaning services in all residential buildings. Manage a 24-hour cleaning service for the campus community.
  • Oversee waste diversion operations, ensuring the daily operational needs of our waste diversion infrastructure, including recycling, composting, and refuse.
  • Ensure that all rules and regulations of the university, all policies and procedures of Facilities Management, and all safety regulations, are known and observed by all staff. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Solid ability to lead, manage and conduct employee training sessions.
  • Strong customer service focus, with the ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals using both oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with an understanding of inclusion and diversity issues in the workplace, as well as the knowledge and skill to engage across a wide variety of individual differences and identities through meaningful interactions characterized by respect, mutual understanding, and reciprocity.
  • Ability to plan, manage, and oversee complex projects related to waste diversion, custodial cleaning, grounds, irrigation, and other landscaping requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of custodial procedures, equipment, and chemicals, and proven ability to conduct employee training sessions in care and operation of institutional equipment, proper use of materials and chemicals, and safety regulations. 
  • Basic knowledge of landscaping and ground maintenance procedures, equipment, chemicals.
  • Interpersonal and customer relation skills including the ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse community and across all organizational levels/departments.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include, but not limited to, MS Office, including: Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access programs. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience leading teams and supervision of custodial or grounds staff, including scheduling, prioritizing, work and managing projects. 
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years).
  • Finalist candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination, background checks, and pass PLU's Driver's Certification Training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AA or BS degree. Certification in the fields of grounds or custodial management.
  • Knowledge of Excel and budget management software, such as Banner.
  • CEFP Certification or E

Department: Facilities Management

Hiring Range: $70,000-$75,000 per year with excellent benefits.

Work Conditions:

  • Work conditions will consist of indoor and outdoor work, in all weather conditions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Average physical strength with regular walking, standing, lifting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and occasional climbing and balancing. 
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Operate equipment involving dexterous use of both hands and feet simultaneously.
  • Good hearing and vision.
