FULL-TIME, TENURE-TRACK ENGLISH COMPOSITION INSTRUCTOR
TRUMAN COLLEGE

The English, Communication, Theater, and Journalism Department of Harry S Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks a tenure-track faculty member to teach first-year and developmental English Composition courses effective Fall 2022. The position entails a 12-credit-hour per semester teaching load, service to department and college committees, and participation in a rigorous three-year tenure process. The ideal candidate will bring initiative, innovation, and leadership to the continuous improvement of the department’s Composition program and programs in developmental writing and reading. In addition, the ideal candidate will successfully develop and use effective teaching strategies to meet students’ diverse needs and engage them in critical thinking and problem-solving. Candidates are expected to be committed to the open-access mission of community colleges and to demonstrate strong skills in incorporating technology into teaching approaches.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching
  • Instruct Aligned Reading and Composition (English 96) and first-year Composition, including English 101 Composition I; English 102 Composition II; and English 101-097 (English 097 is a three-credit co-requisite support course)
  • Demonstrate proficiency and professional currency in teaching at the community college level (preferred) and in using inclusive pedagogical approaches that respond to the needs of first-generation college students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and academic backgrounds
  • Prepare, deliver, and evaluate clear and effective instructional materials and assignments aligned with student learning outcomes and provide feedback responsive to the needs and interests of diverse populations, promoting long-term growth and improvement
  • Help students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and cultivate a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn
  • Include diverse interdisciplinary content in the classroom that engages students and encourages them to be motivated self-learners
Curriculum and Assessment
  • Collaborate with departmental committees
    • to select and develop course materials, textbooks, and other educational resources that meet the course objectives
    • to develop both classroom and programmatic assessment methods in support of student learning outcomes
  • Measure student success through a variety of formative and summative assessment tools (e.g., classroom assessment techniques, rubrics, peer evaluations, portfolios)
  • Participate in the departmental portfolio assessment process
  • Represent Truman College on the CCC English Discipline Committee
Technology
  • Demonstrate competence with current teaching technologies and a willingness to learn how to enhance classroom instruction using the college’s learning management system tools
  • Post syllabi and grades on the learning management system and use instructional software to communicate with students and advisors
Department and College Service
  • Participate in the Tenure Assistance Program curriculum designed for tenure-track faculty
  • Mentor and conduct classroom evaluations of adjunct faculty
  • Maintain office hours for advising, mentoring, and coaching students
  • Work collaboratively with fellow departmental faculty and staff and participate in departmental activities related to setting policies, maintaining master syllabi, and reviewing programs
  • Take responsibility for submitting midterm and final grades, departmental and college reports, and responses to email in a timely fashion
  • Participate i n professional or shared governance committees
  • Engage with and advocate for students in classroom and non-classroom settings
  • Adhere to City Colleges of Chicago board rules, policies, procedures, and code of ethics
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • M.A. in English Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, or related field or M.F.A. in Writing
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively teaching first-year Composition and developmental writing and reading, including using and assessing student learning outcomes; developing student-centered pedagogy based on current best practices; and incorporating technology into teaching approaches to enhance student learning
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to collaborate e ffectively with department colleagues and members of the college community
  • Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population and a commitment to the open-access mission of the community college
  • Demonstrated initiative and skill in managing time-sensitive professional projects, group work, and deadlines
  • A growth mindset and proactive inclination to seek out and participate in professional development opportunities
