Job Summary:

 

The Associate Dean of Students serves in a key leadership role in the Office of the Dean of Students. The Associate Dean of Students will provide support and resources to a diverse range of students facing crises or issues of well-being; consult and provide guidance for faculty and staff handling issues impacting student success; represent the Office of the Dean of Students at campus events; and serve in an on-call duty rotation. They are responsible for coordinating all aspects of alternative dispute resolution; which includes, but is not limited to Title IX informal resolution, student related bias incident reports, and student-involved interpersonal conflict. This includes maintaining sound policies and practices that are compliant with relevant laws and guidance documents, and informing senior administration of critical incidents. The Associate Dean of Students will supervise the Assistant Dean of Students/Deputy Title IX Coordinator and provide oversight for Title IX compliance. Lastly, the Associate Dean of Students is responsible for assisting the Associate Vice President/Dean in administering the day-to-day affairs of the Office of the Dean of Students and will serve in the Dean’s stead when needed.

 

Duties/Physical Demands:

• Develop, coordinate, and facilitate all aspects of an alternative dispute resolution student-facing program at Miami University (Title IX informal resolution, student related bias incident reports, and student-involved interpersonal conflict); this includes program promotion, trainings, and assessment.
• Supervise the Assistant Dean of Students/Title IX Deputy Coordinator to ensure seamless and compliant activation of student Title IX services.
• Serve as the AVP/Dean of Student’s “Chief of Staff”; e.g. coordinating Office of the Dean of Students outreach, student success, and communication efforts, overseeing the allocation of Student Life special events funding, etc.
• Proactively meet with students to address concerns and advocate for and amplify student initiatives.
• Conduct summary suspension meetings for non-Title IX conduct violations.
• Serve in an on-call duty rotation for crisis response.
• Regularly hold student office hours/drop in hours across campus.
• Contribute data and descriptive program information for the Office of the DOS’s annual report and other assessment as required.
• Serve on divisional and institutional committees as assigned by the AVP/DOS.
• Maintain active participation and engagement in relevant student affairs professional associations.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

• A Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, social work, or another appropriate field of graduate study.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in higher education.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed. Ability to work on call hours.

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience working within a division of student affairs, specifically an Office of the Dean of Students.
• Experience with providing administrative oversight and supervision.
• On-call crisis response experience.
• Documented record of initiating proactive strategies that enhance retention and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws such as Title IX, Clery Act, Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (Campus SaVE) Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, crisis response, and conflict management skills.
• A demonstrated understanding of conduct and alternative dispute resolution (mediation, restorative justice, and/or facilitated dialogue) processes.
