Job Description:

APPOINTMENT: August 18, 2022. Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor at the Macomb Campus to teach undergraduate courses in advertising, journalism and broadcasting.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach undergraduate courses in advertising and other multimedia courses, such as news reporting and writing across multiple platforms, sports broadcasting, and multimedia production. Other responsibilities include serving on various department, college, and university-wide committees, and contributing to the field of mass communications by engaging in various professional and/or scholarly activities. Candidates should be able to provide evidence of professional work.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree plus 30 hours in mass communications or related field with professional experience in advertising, public relations, journalism, broadcasting or mass communications. Proficiency in standard video-editing software and standard audio editing software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Terminal degree in advertising, journalism, broadcasting or mass communications with professional multimedia reporting, writing, and producing experience.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of appointment.

THE DEPARTMENT: The department offers bachelor of arts degrees in Broadcasting and Journalism with options in Advertising/Public Relations, Broadcast Production, Multimedia Journalism, and Sports Broadcasting. In addition, the department offers minors in Broadcasting and Journalism, Advertising/Public Relations, and Sports Broadcasting. The department is an energized program with dedicated faculty and students, who receive valuable hands-on experience and mentorship. Faculty and students are active in student organizations (National Broadcasting Society, National Association of Black Journalists, Students in Illinois News Broadcasters Association). Students are recognized annually with state, regional and national awards (NBS Grand Prize, IBS National award, BEA Award of Excellence, NATAS Mid-America Crystal Pillar) for their productions. Students produce and announce live sporting events for ESPN using a high-definition remote truck. They also apply their skills in a HD control room and studio for our student-produced newscast, NEWS3 (2 times a week) and a morning news/talk show (bi-weekly). Students can also gain experience working on our FM radio station, WIUS and the student newspaper, The Western Courier. The department has a reputation for academic and professional excellence.
