Statement of Job:

The University of Southern Maine invites applications for Part Time Faculty to teach courses in Game Design on our Portland campus for our Fall 2022 semester, starting August 29 . This is an in-person teaching position.

The appointment begins Fall, 2022. The minor in Game Design Studies offers a core education in game design, along with several interdisciplinary options for specialized tracks that allow students to further their development in one of the areas crucial to a successful game—programming; art and animation; sound design; writing and narrative design; business and production. The successful candidate for this position will teach in the three core classes of the minor—GDS 100, 200, and 300—as well as other courses in the specialized tracks of the minor for which they are qualified. Preference will be given to applicants for this position who have a terminal degree in a design field—Art, Media, Computer Science, or Creative Writing—or equivalent professional experience in game design. Applicants should also have strong organization skills, teaching experience, and a commitment to engaged learning.

Responsibilities include developing a course syllabus and adhering to the corresponding schedule of course content; responding to student inquiries of course material, both during class time and over email; administering course assignments and/or exams; and grading student coursework in a timely manner.

The University of Southern Maine offers a minor in Game Design Studies. Game Design Studies offers a core education in game design and development, along with several interdisciplinary options for specialized tracks that allow students to further their development in one of the areas crucial to development of a successful game. In game design, the theoretical and practical exist side by side. This program reflects that by challenging students to develop an academic understanding of games while also focusing on the applied skills needed to be part of a game design team. Programmers, writers, artists, designers, and managers all come together in Game Design Studies, building teams and, more importantly, building games.
