Southwestern Illinois College is accepting applications for one, full-time, tenure track Coordinator/Instructor position in the Sign Language Studies/Interpreter Training degree and certificate programs within the Business, Health Sciences & Homeland Securities division.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The successful applicant will serve as the coordinator and instructor for the Sign Language Studies/Interpreter Training program. As coordinator, the individual will be responsible for the organization, administration, periodic review, continued development and overall effectiveness of the educational program/courses. As an instructor, the individual will teach Sign Language Studies/Interpreter courses in both the traditional and computerized environment. The individual will also assess student performance, ensure faculty qualifications and collaborate with Sign Language Studies/Interpreter faculty to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction in the program/courses. Opportunities exist for participation in professional development activities and service on departmental, divisional, and/or college-wide committees.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Certified sign language interpreter (RID and/or ASLTA) or qualified deaf individual.
2. Master’s degree required, field of study preferred includes Sign Language Studies, Interpreter Linguistics or related field.
3. Must possess three years of Sign Language interpreting and teaching experience that includes teaching interpreter training courses, conducting and supervising practicum field experiences, evaluating student achievement, providing input into curriculum development, policy and procedure formulation, and evaluation of program effectiveness. Experience must be within the last 5 years.
4. Shall have knowledge of educational methods and current accreditation and certification procedures. Must possess willingness to adapt teaching methods to include distance-learning techniques.
5. Must possess knowledge of American Sign Language, manual forms of signed English, and the Code of Ethics.
6. Must have good written English skills.
7. Knowledge of and willingness to use computers, applicable software, and Internet are required
8. Valid driver’s license required.
9. Shall meet the minimum standards of instruction established by the Board of Trustees for any assigned courses.

STARTING SALARY: This is a nine-month teaching position with the salary determined by placement on the base salary schedule. For example, the minimum 2021-2022 starting salary at Step 3 on the Master’s Degree column is $51,966. Voluntary overload teaching assignments and mandatory summer program coordination may increase the annual compensation by 40%. The College offers a comprehensive flexible benefit program.

WORK LOCATION: Belleville Campus with district-wide overload teaching opportunities. Driving may be required to other campuses, student field experience or internship sites and/or local deaf functions.
