The School of Communication at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment (non-tenure) beginning August 29, 2022, in the Film and Media Arts division. This is a one-year appointment. Rank will be dependent on the highest degree earned and experience in the field. The School of Communication seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion of those historically underrepresented individuals in higher education. The teaching load will be six courses over the AY22/23, usually three in the fall, and three in the spring.

The courses that may be assigned include undergraduate and graduate courses. These may range from our introductory undergraduate requirement, Comm 105 Visual Literacy, our undergraduate Comm 331 Video Production 1, and Comm 282 Writing for Visual Media. Graduate courses may include Comm 682 Writing for Visual Media, Comm 631 Film/Video Production and Direction (fall-semester production 1). All faculty are to hold office hours each week and participate in school and university activities and service.

We are looking for an instructor who has been practicing in the filmmaking profession or related fields for at least three years, who is proficient in all aspects of media creation, including producing and directing, scriptwriting, cinematography, sound recording, and postproduction. Experience in both fiction and documentary is preferred. We are seeking a diverse application group that reenforces American University’s commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence. Preferred degree: MA or higher. If lacking, then more than three years of extensive professional experience is required.
