Position Summary
The Department of Art & Visual Culture at Spelman College invites applications for an instructor of Art History and Curatorial Studies. The appointment is for one year beginning August 2022.
Applicants are expected to be well-versed in teaching critical theories and methodologies in Art History as well as established and emerging trends in Museum and Curatorial Studies. Applicants should have an active scholarly practice that includes research and writing as well as experience in teaching undergraduate lectures in Art History that interrogate the western canon with an African diasporic focus. The ideal candidate is an innovative scholar whose pedagogical approach to Art History employs interdisciplinary methods to interrogate the changing landscape of museums and Curatorial Studies in the global art and museum industry. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. and prior teaching experience.
The appointment requires a 3/3 teaching load, including introductory and advanced level Art History and Curatorial Studies courses, to be taught in-person. Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in Art History and Curatorial Studies. The application deadline is midnight ( EST ) on [May 1, 2022].
The Art History program at Spelman College is unique in the nation for its concentration on African, African American and African Diaspora art situated within the newly established Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective .
The Department of Art & Visual Culture is part of the Division of the Arts that includes the departments of Dance Performance & Choreography, Music, Theater & Performance, the Digital Moving Image Salon, and the Spelman College Innovation Lab. The Department of Art & Visual Culture offers majors and minors in art history, art, documentary filmmaking and photography, and a minor in curatorial studies.
The successful candidate will support the Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective , entering its fourth year, as part a groundbreaking initiative established with a $5.4 million dollar grant from the Walton Family Foundation to position the Atlanta University Center as the leading incubator of African American museum and visual arts professionals in the United States.
Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in Art History and a minimum of three to five years teaching experience. Advanced Ph.D. candidates also will be considered. Candidates must have a proven track record of scholarship and be able to demonstrate interdisciplinary and creative approaches in teaching Art History. Candidates should be prepared to incorporate object-based learning from the Spelman College Museum permanent collection, special exhibitions, and neighboring arts institutions.
