Deerfield Academy announces a search for a full-time position as College Advisor to start on August 17, 2022. We are looking for individuals who are excited about working with students and their parents/guardians on the year-long process of applying to college, bring out the best in their students throughout that process, and are skilled at working collaboratively with colleagues. Interested candidates should be enthusiastic about living in close proximity to teenagers and working with students both in and outside of the classroom. Deerfield teachers enjoy an outstanding work environment and excellent benefits, and engage with students who are eager to learn. We actively seek to increase the diversity of our faculty and develop an inclusive community.

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

Job Responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibilities include individual and group counseling; writing the school’s recommendation; developing lists of colleges for students to consider; and advising about standardized testing, summer opportunities, scholarships, financial aid, course of study, and personal presentation.
  • Outside of the college process, advisors will supervise co-curricular activities (e.g. varsity or sub-varsity teams, community service activities, clubs, publications, etc.).
  • Other responsibilities include those that are normally part of a boarding school commitment: dormitory association, dining hall duties, committee work, and other routine duties.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in college advising or college admissions, or equivalent professional experience is desirable.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to building an inclusive community.
  • Interest in and demonstrated skill working with adolescents.
  • The interest, initiative, and energy to thrive in a lively and fast-paced residential academic community.
  • A sense of humor, humility, and the ability to work as part of a team.
