Administrator, Rowan University Foundation

The University

Rowan University is a Carnegie-classified national doctoral research institution dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education. Founded in 1923, the University has evolved from a teacher preparation school to a comprehensive research university that’s ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the best national public research universities in the nation.

The University is held as a prime example of the power of visionary philanthropy to transform an institution. Henry Rowan’s historic $100,000,000 gift in 1992 forever changed then-Glassboro State College’s trajectory. At the time, the gift was the largest to a public institution in the United States. It catalyzed unprecedented growth across the University, and made possible its current status as a leader in education, healthcare and research.

Guided by the dynamic leadership of President Ali A. Houshmand, today Rowan is the nation’s 4th fastest-growing research university among public doctoral institutions. The University offers bachelor’s through doctoral programs to nearly 23,000 students through its campuses in Glassboro, Camden, Sewell and Stratford, New Jersey, and online. The University is one of only three institutions in the nation to grant both M.D. and D.O. medical degrees, and when its planned School of Veterinary Medicine is accredited, it will become the first and only institution in New Jersey to offer a D.V.M. degree, and will be one of only two institutions in the country to have schools of allopathic, osteopathic and veterinary medicine.

Rowan is currently home to seven colleges and five schools:
  • William G. Rohrer College of Business
  • Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts
  • College of Education
  • Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering
  • College of Humanities & Social Sciences
  • College of Performing Arts
  • College of Science & Mathematics
  • School of Earth & Environment
  • School of Nursing & Health Professions
  • School of Translational Biomedical Engineering & Sciences
  • Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
  • Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine
In what will be an historic leap forward for our research, healthcare, and life sciences agendas, in December 2021 Rowan University and Virtua Health announced an $85 million gift from Virtua to create the Virtua Health College of Medicine & Health Sciences of Rowan University. Rowan and Virtua share an overarching commitment to improving the health of New Jersey residents and creating a series of meaningful opportunities to:
  • Educate and train the state’s next generation of physicians, nurses and allied health professionals;
  • Innovate by researching, developing and testing new therapies, treatments and models of care; and
  • Increase health equity by meeting the needs of the underserved in the region.
Focused on practical research at the intersection of engineering, medicine, science and business, Rowan has earned national recognition for innovation; commitment to high-quality, affordable education; and developing public-private partnerships.

The University counts 100,000 alumni from 50 states and 42 countries.

Position Summary

Rowan is seeking an outcomes-oriented, self-starting leader to become its next Director of Advancement Administration and Administrator of the Rowan University Foundation (alternately referred to herein as “Director” and/or “Foundation Administrator”). If you are selected, you will join the Division of University Advancement (alternately “Advancement” or “the Division”) on the heels of the successful completion of Rising: The Campaign for Rowan University, in which the University oversubscribed its $120,000,000 goal. Affirmed and energized, the University will capitalize on this momentum by readying itself for a new campaign to fuel the University of the Future, Rowan’s bold new strategic plan. If chosen (and if you choose us), you will be a vital component of the success of this audacious endeavor.

The successful candidate will report to the Vice President for University Advancement, who also has the title of Executive Director of the Rowan University Foundation. As Director and Foundation Administrator, you will serve on Advancement’s management team. You’ll be a key point of contact for those reporting directly to the Vice President/Executive Director as well as important external and internal constituents, including donors, prospects, Foundation Board members, members of the University’s Board of Trustees and senior leaders throughout the institution.

A recognized leader and “go-to” colleague, you’ll be essential to the development of policies, procedures, and daily operations for the Division and the Foundation. Managing three employees, you’ll oversee the Divisional budget, confidential personnel matters relating to the Division, the Foundation Scholarship Program, Foundation operations and – crucially – the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

You’ll also serve as the liaison to the Offices of Finance, Budget, Accounting Services, Financial Aid, Bursar and Human Resources.

The University Advancement Team

If you’re the selected candidate, you will become part of a culture within the Division of University Advancement that is characterized by consummate professionalism, an exemplary work ethic and a high collective EQ. Above all, this culture – which you will contribute to and shape – is team-oriented. Seeking and recognizing opportunities to aid and empower our teammates are hallmarks of how we function. We are highly collaborative, and rely on our colleagues to provide ideas and feedback – including and especially feedback that helps us to carry out our mission more effectively and become better professionals. We value clear, honest, respectful communication and strive always to do what we say we will do.

We create an ecosystem of learning within the Division, and promote team members from within when feasible. We recruit professionals whose values, work ethic and expertise align with and complement ours.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Rowan University promotes a diverse community that begins with students, faculty, staff and administrators who respect each other and value one another’s inherent dignity. By identifying and removing barriers and fostering individual potential, Rowan cultivates a community in which all members can learn and grow. The Rowan community is committed to a safe environment that encourages intellectual, academic and social interaction and engagement across multiple intersections of identities. At Rowan, creating and maintaining a caring community that embraces diversity in its broadest sense is among the highest of institutional priorities.

On the University Advancement team and throughout the University, we believe every team member enriches our diversity by exposing us to a broad range of ways to understand and engage with the world; identify challenges; and discover, design and deliver solutions.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Plan, direct, implement and evaluate the Foundation’s day-to-day operations and ensure that all actions of the Foundation are carried out in accordance with applicable laws governing public foundations.
  • Implement Foundation financial transactions as directed by the Foundation Board and its Investment Committee including, but not limited to, capital calls, distributions, management of endowed gifts and transfer of designated funds.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Foundation Board’s attorneys and financial advisors.
  • Prepare documentation and oversight of the auditing process and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Assist in matters of personnel and other areas of a confidential nature.
  • Ensure compliance for all Foundation Board and Committee activities including, but not limited to, proper advertisement of meetings/retreats, agendas and meeting materials.
  • Serve as liaison to the Foundation Board of Directors by communicating appropriate information and responding to inquiries as necessary.
  • Ensure accuracy and punctuality of the financial transactions of the Foundation, including regular transfers to the University.
  • Provide financial reports as requested.
  • Oversee daily deposits to ensure proper crediting for all gifts.
  • Maintain official files and records for the Foundation, including donor agreements, financial transactions and policies.
  • Prepare budget planning for University Advancement and the Foundation.
  • Oversee the Foundation Scholarship Program to ensure that donor intentions are adhered to in the selection process and appropriate information is provided to the Offices of Financial Aid and Bursar.
  • Ensure that scholarship donors are sent accurate, timely stewardship reports.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the Vice President/Executive Director on matters related to, among other things, budgeting; compliance with University policies and local, state and federal laws; and a range of personnel issues.
About You

If you are an outstanding candidate for this role, you’re an experienced professional, ideally with concentrated board engagement and management expertise. You’re a relationship builder; you possess the stature and interpersonal skills to meaningfully engage and support the University’s diverse leaders, alumni, students, volunteers, donors and prospective donors in a manner that generates excitement, inspires action, deepens commitment and increases support. You have the proven ability to strategically and effectively navigate within a multifaceted organizational environment, ideally demonstrated through direct experience within a complex research university setting. You’re a transparent and collaborative team member who thrives in a workplace that values diversity, creativity, entrepreneurship, innovation and a “let’s figure it out and get it done” spirit. Your positivity inspires, and your work ethic sets a high standard for your teammates. In short, you’re the kind of colleague that every colleague would want to have.

As a successful leader within the University Advancement team, you will:
  • Lead with your integrity. You’ll be trustworthy in word and deed, and your word will be impeccable.
  • See every day as an opportunity to grow and learn, and enjoy helping others do likewise.
  • Derive satisfaction in supporting and empowering your teammates, and inspire others to do their best.
  • View honest feedback and constructive criticism as gifts for which to be grateful.
  • Thrive in an atmosphere of accountability.
  • Communicate clearly, and do what you say you will do.
  • Exude positivity, and be slow to ascribe negative motivation to your colleagues’ actions.
As a professional, you have:
  • Proven ability to achieve goals.
  • Experience and a strong working knowledge of – or at least direct exposure to – advancement and foundation operations, as well as board management.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing operational policies.
  • An inclination to examine existing procedures and, when appropriate, make changes that render them more efficient and effective.
  • A keen understanding of engagement of board members and management of a 501(C)(3) organization.
  • Excellent “soft skills” and the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
  • The inclination and ability to take primary responsibility for and manage multiple projects concurrently, and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
  • A strong capacity to collaborate and build consensus with creativity, insight and transparency.
As a manager, you:
  • See yourself primarily as one whose role is to empower those reporting to you to be successful.
  • Lead by example, particularly with regard to work ethic.
  • Set and communicate expectations clearly.
  • Believe in the power of encouragement and affirmation.
  • Share feedback consistently and thoughtfully, and seek to create an environment in which your colleagues can do the same.
  • Believe you have a vital role in helping your colleagues develop their careers. This includes connecting them with opportunities for professional development, and encouraging them to take on new responsibilities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. An advanced degree, particularly an MBA, is a plus.
  • Minimum of five years of direct and/or transferrable experience, preferably in a higher education setting and within an office or department with an organizational leadership function.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and auditing compliance requirements.
  • A valid driver’s license, as occasional travel is required.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and professionalism.
  • Ability to work with all levels of the University community, including volunteers, students, faculty, department heads and deans.
Preferred Requirements
  • Prior personnel management experience. Candidates without personnel management experience but with otherwise strong credentials will be considered, provided that they – if hired for the position – agree to participate in a program of professional development designed to build skills and knowledge related to personnel management.
  • Knowledge of Banner Financial System or similar financial platform.
Occasional evening and weekend work is required. This is currently a “hybrid-remote” position that balances weekly in-office and remote work, but the nature of the position calls for the successful candidate to be physically present in the office for a majority of the work week. Determinations regarding this position’s potential flexible work options will be considered in adherence to applicable policies and subject to approval by Human Resources.
