Job Description

The University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry invites applications for a Post Doctoral Fellow for an NSF-funded project focused on multispecies above- and below-ground dynamics and soil-water-carbon interactions. Preferred training includes soil science, agronomy, and watershed management to contribute to the study of transitions in land use to perennial agroecosystems and agroforestry. Strong skills in spatial and temporal data analysis and statistical modeling are required, and experience in developing alternative land use scenarios is preferred. Examples of projects include:
  • Analyzing above- and below-ground growth characteristics of multispecies management systems (Ex.: biomass accumulation, resource allocation, competition for resources, root parameters, etc.)
  • Quantifying spatial and temporal changes in soil parameters (physical, chemical, and biological) as influenced by vegetation management (Ex.: multispecies systems, alleycropping, silvopasture).
  • Assessing and modeling carbon sequestration in multispecies systems (sample analysis, data usage, and model simulations).
  • Conducting water quality research and watershed management
The successful candidate will work in the research lab of Dr. Ranjith Udawatta and will be co-advised by Dr. Sarah Lovell. In addition to conducting independent research and publishing manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, the postdoctoral research associate will be expected to contribute to writing grants, developing innovative research directives, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in agronomy, soil science, watershed management, environmental science, or related field by the time of appointment.

Candidates will be evaluated on: Skills in spatial/temporal analysis and statistical modeling. Previous evidence of academic scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications and field & laboratory experience is expected. Proven ability to plan and implement independent research projects from start to finish. Commitment to a participating in a collaborative environment is required. Competition vector analysis, tempo-spatial data analysis, carbon sequestration, watershed management, model simulations (C sequestration, water quality, soil/pollutant transport models), and statistical analysis procedures.

Application Materials

Send a cover letter describing relevant experience, current CV, and list of three names for references directly to Dr. Sarah Lovell, slovell@missouri.edu and Dr. Ranjith Udawatta udawattar@missouri.edu

Other Information

Position Location: The successful candidate will be located within the University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry (UMCA) in Columbia, MO. UMCA was established in 1998 and has grown to become one the world's leading centers contributing to research in agroforestry, the science and practice of intensive land-use management combining trees and/or shrubs with crops and/or livestock. The Center has been recognized as a Program of Distinction by the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, a designation that reflects the successful past and indicates a commitment to future growth.
