DePauw University ( http://www.depauw.edu ), a top-tier liberal arts college with one of the first Schools of Music in the country, invites applications for a full-time term Assistant Professor in the School of Music ( https://www.depauw.edu/music/ ) beginning August 2022. Renewal of this position may be possible based on successful performance and institutional need. Primary responsibilities include providing excellent applied violin instruction to music majors, minors, and students in the College of Liberal Arts, with possible teaching in an area of secondary interest, and leading recruitment initiatives for the violin studio as well as in the strings area. The work in recruitment may account for up to one-third of the responsibilities for the position. The candidate is expected to provide sample lessons for prospective students and participate in prospective student events and auditions. The successful candidate is also expected to develop a strong musical presence as a performer and participant in professional organizations such as ASTA.

In 2015, the DePauw University School of Music launched the 21st-Century Musician (21CM) Initiative, a complete reimagining of the skills, tools, and experiences necessary to create musicians of the future—flexible, entrepreneurial musicians who find diverse musical venues and outlets in addition to traditional performance spaces, develop new audiences, and utilize their music innovatively to impact and strengthen communities. Our program is one of the few required multi-course entrepreneurial music curricula in the country. Within the next two years, the School of Music will become a part of a larger school incorporating disciplines in the creative and performing arts. In addition to developing artistic excellence in their discipline, music students will encounter frameworks for interdisciplinary exploration, collaboration, and innovation. All faculty members will play a role in shaping this vision.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in music or commensurate experience
  • Evidence of professional-level performance
  • Record of success in recruitment

  • Teaching ability in a cognate area in music
  • Focus on creativity, design thinking, innovation
  • History of interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Knowledge or skill with another art form
