The Center for Nanomedicine, housed within the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, brings together engineers, basic scientists, and clinicians working under one roof on the translation of novel delivery technologies for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.

Job Description

The Center for Nanomedicine seeks a highly motivated and productive individual interested in contributing to our efforts to improve human health through the development of new methods of drug and gene delivery. The successful candidate will report directly to the Center Director, Justin Hanes, and will also work closely with the Vice Chair for Research of the Wilmer Eye Institute, Laura Ensign. We seek candidates who are passionate and compassionate leaders, have a stellar academic record in the field of drug delivery or a closely related field, have strong mentoring and writing skills, and who enjoy being part of a team effort. The position is open, and the successful candidate is expected to start this summer.
  • The candidate is expected to have a strong background in biomedical engineering or a related field, including a PhD or MD degree.
  • Experience leading work on innovative approaches to drug and gene delivery is desired.
  • The successful candidate will be qualified to contribute to, including management of various aspects, of a robust research enterprise that spans drug and gene delivery approaches to the treatment of several diseases, including those that affect the eye, brain, lungs, and more.
  • A strong record of mentoring students and postdocs, grant and paper writing activities, and project budget management is desired.
  • The candidate must be a team player, excellent collaborator, and possess superior communication skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
