The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is currently seeking a passionate Chemistry educator who inspires students and is ready to be inspired by our Corps of Cadets.

The attractive riverside campus is home to a nationally and internationally representative student body of about 1,000 diverse Cadets.  The Academy provides the professional education and training required to prepare young women and men for careers as commissioned officers in the U. S. Coast Guard, one of our Nation’s five Armed Services.  The Academy offers B.S. degrees in nine academic majors:  Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cyber Systems, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine/Environmental Sciences, Operations Research/Computer Analysis, Management, and Government.  The Academy is located near the shoreline of southeastern Connecticut, midway between New York City and Boston, and is within commuting range of regional, as well as national, colleges and universities in the CT/RI/MA tri-state area.  

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy invites applications for Lecturer of Chemistry.  The desired start date is July 18, 2022.

The successful candidate will teach five sections of in-person chemistry lecture/laboratory per semester. In the event of COVID restrictions, portions of the lecture teaching may be remote synchronous instruction. Classes and laboratory will be a mix of general chemistry I and II lecture and laboratory or upper level classes when appropriate. Candidates will be expected to provide student support through a mix of help room and office hour availability. The candidate will also perform other collateral duties as assigned. The teaching load will be 15 contact hours per semester during the school year then over the summer the candidate will assist with curriculum development, program assessment, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a closely related science field.
  • Experience teaching general chemistry lecture and laboratory in a multi-section course.
  • Experience teaching general chemistry at the undergraduate level using an inclusive, active learning, student centered pedagogy.
  • Experience teaching upper level classes in organic chemistry, microbiology or toxicology and other credentials such as a publication record in peer-reviewed science journals a definite plus.
  • Candidates must demonstrate competence in creating and fostering a community of inclusion and diversity.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse student population a must.
  • Demonstrated experience consistent with full commitment to the Coast Guards core values will be expected.

Salary offers may be made outside of the listed range ($71,006 to $105,806) for exceptional candidates. No relocation expenses are offered.
