The Student Development Specialist provides academic, career discernment, and transfer planning advisement to students in all majors, and is responsible for advising a large cohort of students from connection to completion. This position serves as a conduit for students to access other academic support services, financial aid, and co-curricular activities to support their success.

Duties include advising students in face-to-face and online environments; using computerized advising and career assessment tools; creating and updating DegreeWorks plans; providing academic program planning to students at their high school; assisting students with navigating and understanding college; including selecting a major, degree and course requirements; using online resources including O*Net, ARTSYS,Focus2Career, GradLeaders and the College Catalog to provide students with up-to-date and accurate information; documenting all student interactions; maintaining appropriate paperwork; presenting at advising and career-related events; and performing other duties as assigned by supervisor. This position serves as a member of the Student Intervention and Prevention (SIP) team and is required to participate in College-wide committees.

This is an exempt, professional staff position reporting to the Director for Advising, Career, and Transfer Services.

Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia; non-residents are expected to relocate to meet this requirement.

A master’s degree in psychology, counseling, human development, higher education or related field and three years of related academic advising and/or career counseling experience are required.

Other requirements include:

  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency using MS Office programs, database software and proficiency with student information management systems, preferably Banner 9, DegreeWorks, Blackboard, GradLeaders, Focus2Career software.
  • A solid understanding of the of the unique concerns with regard to advisement that exist within targeted populations to include LGBTQ students, students of color, veterans, women, first generation, international, and neurodiverse students.
  • Demonstrated ability to use cross-generational outreach approaches and the ability to listen, question, reflect and analyze student concerns to assist in facilitating student success and goal completion.
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills; and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a broad range of internal and external constituents including students, employers, transfer school partners, faculty, alumni and staff.
  • A demonstrated history of managing multiple tasks with attention to detail and a motivated/enthusiastic work style coupled with superior relationship-building skills using a proactive approach and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a broad range of internal and external constituents including new and continuing students, faculty, parents, transfer school partners, alumni and community members.

English/Spanish bilingual; college and/or community college experience; experience leading large group presentations; and MBTI Qualified Administrator and/or Global Career Development Facilitator Certification are preferred.
