About the Department/Unit

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) works to advance American University's commitment to respecting and valuing diversity by serving as a resource and liaison for students, staff, and faculty on issues of equity through education, outreach, and advocacy. To achieve this mission, the center is dedicated to enhancing LGBTQ, multicultural, first generation, and women's experiences on campus.

Summary/Objective

This position will work primarily to meet the needs of LGBTQIA+ students, and also serve as a resource for the entire campus community on issues of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and related topics. The Assistant Director for Education and Support Programs provides leadership around a broad array of services, programs, and resources to students, staff, faculty, and the campus community on LGBTQIA+ related issues.

This position will provide a range of educational programs, trainings and workshops, advocacy, policy work, and support signature events, such as affinity graduations. Intersectionality is core to the work this position supports, and the incumbent must demonstrate competencies in social justice and racial justice work. The position will work extensively with other units across campus to develop and host programs.

Essential Functions
  1. Student Development & Advising: Provide support, advice, and guidance to students, individually and in groups, to help develop personal, interpersonal and organizational skills to effectively assume and fulfill leadership roles.
  2. Programmatic Work: Primary responsibility is developing a range of programs for LGBTQIA+ students.
  3. Campus Wide: Establishes and maintains collaborative and collegial working relationships with various campus partners and able to navigate university systems and boundaries such as gender-based housing.
  4. Committee/Liaison: Serve on campus wide committees such as “Chosen Name” policy to support the advancement of strategic goals related to inclusion, equity, access, and belonging.
  5. Outreach & Administration: Jointly responsible for administering office functions of CDI, including supervising student workers.

  • Supervise one graduate and three undergraduate student staff assistant and indirectly supervise 20+ part-time student staff and student volunteers.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs and in assessing and meeting the needs of historically underrepresented communities are required.
  • Prior supervisory experience required. A proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team is a must, and a demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of campus and community constituencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage fiscal and personnel resources, plan and evaluate programs and services, and think strategically and proactively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to handle sensitive matters with judgment, tact, and diplomacy required.
  • Experience with workshop facilitation, student development and professional staff supervision is required.
  • Must demonstrate cross-cultural communication and computer literacy skills sufficient to carry out job-related responsibilities.
