Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Job Title: Campus Safety Officer

Department: University Police

Reports to: Chief of Police or designee

Position Summary: This position will be responsible for greeting incoming visitors to the police department, assisting University Police Officers by dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls, answering phones, assisting with walk-ins, monitoring radio frequencies, communicating information via the radio/telephone to officers in the field, and assisting staff with administrative and non-criminal duties; entering data into CAD/RMS, monitoring alarm systems and weather tracking systems; must become LEADS certified; operate the Student I.D. computer system, conduct traffic control, conduct parking enforcement, and conduct safety patrols; answer non-criminal calls for service, document calls for service in police reports.

Candidates must be available for Overtime on weekends and opposite shifts on an “as needed” basis. Candidate will be expected to become certified in CPR and First Aid.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Greeting incoming visitors and answering emergency and non-emergency phone calls, while monitoring radio frequencies and alarm systems. Dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls, while entering associated data into CAD/RMS.

2. Assisting officers with administrative and non-criminal duties, including creation and filing police reports, tracking of contact information, and scheduling.

3. Perform data entry in the University's main student/employee data systems, and utilize the system to acquire information needed for emergency and non-emergency purposes.

4. Obtain and maintain LEADS certifications and proficiently operate LEADS computer.

5. Conduct parking enforcement, traffic control, conduct safety patrols, answer non-emergency calls for service, and document these actions in police reports.

6. Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications.

Other Functions:

1. Initiate emergency response procedures, and fulfill responsibilities in handling emergencies in accordance with University's emergency procedures.

2. Maintain positive working relationships with campus personnel and local emergency responders.

3. Perform occasional light administrative tasks.

Required Qualifications:



Education: A high school diploma or equivalent. Some college preferred.

Experience: Clerical or customer service experience required. Law enforcement experience preferred.

Specific Skills: Ability to speak clearly and be understood via radio and phone communication. Ability to read and understand and apply both written and verbal directives. Normal hearing, due to the heavy volume of telephone and radio communication, audible alarms, and duties requiring monitoring of police/fire/EMS radio traffic. Strong command of the English language. Ability to maintain calm and professional demeanor during stressful or critical situations. Ability to communicate department/College policies and procedures in a professional manner. Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office products. Comfortable with technical equipment to include, radios, scanners, electronic access control, fire panels and PC based programs. Ability to work varying shifts, as required to meet departmental requirements.

Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications: Illinois Driver's License

Physical Requirements : Be able to walk, sit, stand, move signs/barricades, and drive motorized vehicles.

Working Conditions:
1. Ability to drive a vehicle for extended amounts of time without interruption (intervals up to 3-4 hours).
2. Possess visual acuity.
3. Good physical condition without any restriction in the ability to walk, run, stand or climb multiple flights of stairs.
4. Ability to sit for an extended amount of time (intervals in excess of 60 minutes).
5. Ability to perform extended foot patrols multiple times during a shift (intervals in excess of 30 minutes).
6. Ability to give pursuit of offender on foot.
7. Strong or power grasps of evidence, property, suspects; tight grasp, wrist, and arm movement.
8. Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds (floor to waist, waist to floor, floor to chest); continuous transporting (pull) up to 30 lbs.; lifting of items weighing from 11 to over 100 lbs. below and at waist level, either with or without assistance; transporting (Pull) items weighing 26 – 50 lbs. for distances up to 50 yards without assistance; Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
9. Be able to go from standing to kneeling on both knees, lie down, get up to knees and stand up) Officer do not crawl often, more getting down on knees and back to feet
10. Fast walking speed, apprehension and pursuit simulation of suspect
11. Ability to react and work calmly under pressure.

24/7 Operation, operating 3 daily shifts
