The Communication Department at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic University located in the Silicon Valley, seeks a three-year Renewable Term Lecturer (RTL) in Digital Filmmaking, beginning in September 2022. The position will be responsible for designing and teaching the production labs for introductory, intermediate, and advanced production courses, as well as a filmmaking practicum. The position is a non-tenure-track 10-month full-time appointment (September – June) teaching over three quarters.  The appointment may be renewed for additional terms contingent upon the availability of funds; persistent programmatic need; and superior performance in teaching, service, and professional activity. The initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of additional terms of three years and then six years. Lecturers have responsibilities in teaching, instructional leadership, curriculum development and advising (70%), professional activity (15%), and service (15%). The expected teaching load is 7 courses over three academic quarters (Fall, Winter, and Spring). All teaching will be at the undergraduate level. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with the 11th week set for final examinations. The position is for in-person instruction, however, the successful applicant may have to provide temporary online instruction should the county health or university health situation so require.

 

Basic Qualifications: Candidates must have, at least, a B.A. in film/television

Production, and multiple years of production experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Candidates should demonstrate significant proficiency in using digital filmmaking equipment, Avid editing software.
• Preference will be given to those with active filmmaking agendas that align with the department’s focus on social justice.
• Demonstration of inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.
• Demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students, and working with a diverse population of staff, faculty and students.
• An MFA in film/television production

 

Responsibilities:

 

Teaching (70%)

Faculty responsibilities are specified by the Santa Clara University Faculty Handbook (sec. 3.6). Duties include but are not limited to:

A) Teaching the assigned teaching load of 27 sections over three quarters, consisting of the labs for courses such as;

• Comm 30: Introduction to Digital Film; using the Canon XC-15, introduction to Avid editing software; three-point lighting using LED Fresnels; capturing audio in the field using external mics. 
• Comm 131F (Short Fiction), Comm 132D (Short Documentary), and Comm 131E (New Media & Experimental); using the Canon C100, intermediate Avid editing, lighting for documentary and fiction using LED panels/soft boxes/1K fresnels, capturing audio in the field using Shure mixers and boom microphones, and audio postproduction.
• Comm 134 (Cinematography); advanced lighting techniques in the field and in a studio setting; using a doorway dolly. 
• Comm 135 (Editing) advanced editing techniques using Avid editing software and Adobe After Effects.

B) Teaching a production practicum that allows students to create independent film projects outside of a formal class.

C) Attending the lecture sections of production courses, as requested, to help teach camera, lighting, and editing workshops.

D) Holding weekly office hours to assist students with production and post-production issues.

E) Providing undergraduate advising for film and television Communication majors.

F) Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including: Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared way, including final exam screenings at the scheduled time.

G) Coordinating with the assigned course instructors so that lab instructions align with the course schedule and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students.

H) Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the course instructor by the designated deadline.

I) Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all lab courses.

 

Professional Activity (15%)

Professional activity refers to scholarly or creative work, professional practice, or other active engagement in a discipline or field that enables a Lecturer to remain current in that area and vital as a teacher. Examples of professional activity include attendance or presentations at conferences, occasional publications that contribute to scholarship or pedagogy in the field, creative work in the arts, and practice in a professional field. 

 

Service (15%)

Service is work other than teaching and professional activity that fosters and advances the missions and goals of the department, the college or school, or the University. It may also include service to the profession, such as participation on committees of a professional organization, and service to the community performed in virtue of a Lecturer’s professional expertise or association with the University. The service expected of Lecturers will be appropriate to their expertise and experience and will include, at least, attending department meetings, participating in curriculum review, and other duties that might be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
