Visiting College Lecturer – Instrumental Music Education

Cleveland State University’s School of Music invites applicants for a non-tenure track appointment as a Visiting College Lecturer in Music Education (Instrumental), beginning August 22, 2022. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about contemporary pedagogical approaches, teaching methods, techniques and trends in music education, and have a reputation for excellence in teaching and in forging relationships and creating partnerships in the music education community. Teaching requirements include (but are not limited to): brass methods, woodwind methods, and supervising student teachers. Applicants with the ability to also teach percussion methods and music technology are encouraged to apply. The position also requires participating in program assessment. 

The visiting lecturer will teach 12 credits a semester and engage in service duties as assigned. The position is for one (1) year with the possibility to be renewed twice for one (1) additional year each, for a total of three (3) years. Cleveland State is searching for active, culturally, and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree in music education, or bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in field related to music education
  • Previous or current valid teaching license
  • Three years of K-12 teaching in instrumental music
  • Ability to contribute, through teaching and/or service, to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • D./ABD in music education
  • Experience teaching instrumental methods (e.g., brass/woodwind methods) at the undergraduate level
  • Experience supervising undergraduate student teachers
  • Experience guiding undergraduate student teachers in completing the edTPA
  • Greater than 3-years of secondary teaching experience in instrumental music
  • Experience teaching beginning instrumentalists
  • Training in Music Learning Theory
  • Qualified to teach instrumental conducting
  • Qualified to teach percussion methods
  • Qualified to teach music technology course
  • Knowledge of curricular design, including Understanding By Design/Universal Design for Learning
