Renders legal advice and assistance to UH System and its component universities. Serves as a higher education legal generalist or a subject-matter specialist for the UH System and its components.Job Duties

  1. Provides all UH components with legal expertise in one or more areas, such as employment, corporate, transactional and regulatory matters, defending the University, etc.
  2. Attends meetings, depositions, mediations, witness interviews, official hearings, and so forth; makes recommendations, gives advice.
  3. Determines appropriate department/individual to respond, contacts parties, and provides instruction and guidance.
  4. Collects responses, reviews, edits and investigates responses as necessary.
  5. Conducts, schedules and coordinates meetings to formulate responses and prepare witnesses for giving testimony.
  6. Provides leadership and mentoring to assistant general counsels.
  7. Serves as lead in the development and delivery of training related to legal issues throughout the UH System.
  8. Reviews correspondence, policies and other written material for legal issues. May also review bids and contracts and monitor contract fulfillment under applicable university policy, state and federal laws.
  9. Reviews requests for information maintained by UH, assesses which items should be responded to and which are objectionable.
  10. Directs staff to assist Office of Attorney General in assembling documentation and providing support services. Performs other job-related duties as required.

Qualifications :

Doctoral and 1-7 years experience

Asst. General Counsel (grade 113)- Requires a Doctoral and 1 year experience

Sr. Asst. General Counsel (grade 115)- Requires a Doctoral and 3 years of experience

Associate General Counsel (grade 116)- Requires a Doctoral and 7 years of experience

Requires singular knowledge of a specialized advanced professional discipline or the highest level of general business knowledge, normally acquired through attainment of a directly job-related terminal degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of one (1) to seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Requires professional licensing, certification or registration directly related to the job, as specified on a job description addendum.

Notes to Applicant: Preferred Qualifications: *Experience handling and advising on various legal areas. *Previous higher education experience is a plus. *Spanish proficiency.
