A.T. Still University's School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA) invites applications for an exempt Assistant/Associate Professor of Pharmacology. This position reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Innovation and Curricular Integration. Full-time (1.0 FTE) basic science faculty members contribute to the educational model and mission of ATSU-SOMA through responsibilities in educational processes that facilitate student-directed learning resulting in graduates that are Master Adaptive Learners (MAL). The basic science faculty member also participates in activities that serve the students, the university and ATSU-SOMA. Scholarly activity and research are required as part of faculty growth and development and advancement of the Institution and the Osteopathic profession.

Characteristic Job Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as content expert in area of expertise;
  • Serve as small group (CBIQ) learning facilitator;
  • Collaborate on the creation and continued development of a facilitator’s guide for case-application learning sessions by contributing to case formation and improvement;
  • Attend and contribute to curricular meetings and faculty development offerings;
  • Provide examination questions in area of expertise;
  • Be responsible for both formative and summative student assessment;
  • Prepare evaluation tools that will aid in the evaluation of students’ work product and help to identify students that are discovered to be weak in various areas;
  • Interview prospective candidates for ATSU-SOMA;
  • Serve as advisor/coach to assigned students;
  • Be willing to serve as advisor to at least one student club;
  • Serve on committees, as assigned, or elected; (two major committees)
  • Be actively involved with scholarly activity and research as assigned by the supervisor as appropriate with workload distribution and provide annual outcomes;
  • Prepare educational tools (A/V, demonstration models, lectures, lesson plans…etc.);
  • Prepare demonstrations, lectures, small group discussions, and select suggested and required reading from various sources when appropriate;
  • Serve on collaborative University-wide groups as approved by the Dean or designee;
  • Must be able to take direction and receive assignments from the Curricular Deans;
  • Must be available for work during the hours assigned, for student instruction or learning processes; and
  • Accept other duties assigned/needed to meet the goals and mission of ATSU-SOMA.
Knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics:

Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the following essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of and maintaining student and patient’s privacy (i.e. FERPA, HIPAA…etc.);
  • Ability to follow proper OSHA and safety guidelines; Complete Annual Employee training per ATSU policy;
  • Willingness to protect equipment (office, medical, facility);
  • Strong communications skills are essential as well as computer literacy (MS Office Suit [i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Sharepoint]) and accurate data entry skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Willingness to be trained on the current learning management system and other technologies;
  • Ability to establish and maintain a productive work schedule;
  • Possess effective use of organizational and planning skills, including attention to detail and follow-through;
  • Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands;
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Be able to be flexible to accept other duties needed/assigned for the COM;
  • Be able to work cooperatively and collegially with others, consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect while following

  • The ability to report to work as scheduled, ready to devote full attention and energy to the important work of ATSU-SOMA; and

Minimum qualifications:

Education and experience equivalent to : Doctorate level of achievement (Ph.D., Psy.D., etc…) and at least two (2) years of teaching experience at a medical college level required.

Physical demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include ability to distinguish the nature of objects by using the eye.

Work environment:

Employee is responsible for performing duties in an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion or harassment, including sexual harassment. Work is performed indoors in an office setting and outside of the office at local community outreach sites. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.

Safety:

Assists in the creation of a culture of safety and environmental protection by performing work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor.
