Suffolk University’s Upward Bound Program is an intensive six-week
educational experience offered to a select number of Boston Public
School students. The goal of the program is to assist these
students in achieving positive post-secondary outcomes through
academic tutoring, test prep and concentrated academic classes.
Summer Instructors are responsible for teaching during Upward
Bound’s six-week summer component. The goal of curriculum design is
to be responsive to DOE curriculum requirements for the coming
Summer 2022 Theme:
This summer we are focusing on the role that education
plays in our society, lives and first-generation community. As our
youth develop a sense of who they are, it is crucial that we
support their growth by instilling the importance of experiential
education, self-advocacy and empowerment.
English/Writing Intensive Instructor:
In this course, students will examine how education
impacts society. Throughout the summer, students will improve their
writing skills by developing a research paper.
- Develop curriculum according to Upward Bound program guidelines
for assigned class. Design class with subject matter that reflects
current high school content as specified in MA Department of
Education (DOE) curriculum frameworks and to meet learning
- Facilitate a course with a cohort of a diverse population of
students and respond in an appropriate manner to behavior and
student concern as well as collaborating with Teaching Assistant
(TA) and Upward Bound (UB)staff.
- Respect Upward Bound summer policies and procedures:
possessing a thorough understanding of the Upward Bound Program’s
overall goals and assist with a program of study that will promote
success and generate confidence for students.
- Develop and administer pre and post-testing to students at
the beginning and end of the summer program. Prepare and submit
daily homework assignments, missing homework assignment sheets and
daily attendance sheets. Submit progress reports on each student’s
performance on a weekly basis or as necessary.
- B.A. or B.S. degree in the
relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.
- A teaching philosophy that
embraces the belief that all students can succeed given the
appropriate environment and curriculum.
- Demonstrated ability to
effectively develop curriculum that is engaging and relevant.
- Appropriate Massachusetts teaching
credential plus one year of high school or college classroom
- Instructors must be committed to
Upward Bound’s goals and objectives and exhibit qualities necessary
for working with students and parents.
- Must be highly-motivated,
energetic, and engaging.
