Job Summary

The ULAR Procurement Specialist provides assistance to professional, administrative and management personnel in a staff capacity providing financial and administrative support in the procurement of research animals for the university. Work activities require the application of specialized skills which can be acquired through a combination of job-related training and on the job experience. A significant portion of the Animal Procurement Specialists responsibility is to provide exceptional customer service as ULAR liaison between vendors, staff, colleagues, researchers, and accounts payable. The individual is expected to assure the prompt and accurate delivery of requested goods and to resolve any issues pertaining to animal orders placed

Essential Functions

  • Procure a variety of research animals to support research studies university-wide from both preferred vendors and other institutions. This includes but is not limited to working with vendor representatives to order animals, bedding, food, and other supplies as well as resolve shipment and/or payment problems; communicate committed requisition number, vendor name, and any expended dollar amounts.
  • Document management associated with animal procurement to include but not limited to document check and review animal orders (i.e. quantities, species, etc.) against the appropriate research protocol (i.e. expiration dates) to ensure compliance with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
  • Monitor and maintain an Animal Facility Management database to ensure animal/specie ordering is in compliance with approved research protocols as well as agency guidelines.
  • Participate in development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure accreditation and compliance with federal laws including the USDA and relevant agency guidelines such as state, public health service, and AAALAC.


  • Required Qualifications

    High School or Equivalent

    Minimum of 3 years’ experience in lab animal field

    Physical Demands

    Typically sitting at a desk/table/standing/walking

    Lifting less than or equal to 25lbs
