About the English Language Center

The English Language Center (ELC)’s Intensive English Program and International Gateway Program are accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. In addition, the ELC is a member of the University And College Intensive English Programs Consortium (UCIEP) and EnglishUSA.

Job Summary

Adjunct instructors are needed to join our special programs teaching 3-13 hours per week for 2-11 weeks. Course vary by program including but not limited to: Advanced ESL writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, content-based English (business, science, communications), teaching methodology, introduction to university culture, teaching methodology, and/or test preparation.

Essential Functions

  • Reviewing the course syllabus and update with section information according to ELC/University course guidelines;
  • Teaching the course as scheduled on the synchronous days and in case of illness, notify program coordinator and reschedule the session to a different day;
  • Scheduling and holding at least one office hour per week via Zoom;
  • Making yourself available to students and responding to students’ email inquiries within 24 hours;
  • Maintaining accurate documentation of course records to justify the grades submitted;
  • Submitting student grades in accordance with ELC policy;
  • Any other duties directly related to the course as assigned by the department head;
  • Attending the course planning meetings, program welcome event, and final event;
  • Participating in testing activities related to course assessments;
  • Accepting observers into your classroom as scheduled;
  • Administering course evaluations at midterm and the end of the term;
  • Completing student evaluations in a timely manner;
  • Attending ELC Faulty/Staff meetings and additional program events (Optional).


  • Required Qualifications
    • A master’s degree (in hand) in TESOL, TESL, TEFL, Applied Linguistics (certificate programs do not meet accreditation requirements).
    • At least 2 years of experience in higher education or working with college age students.
    • Ability to teach academic preparation courses.
    • Ability to work independently after orientation in a fast-paced academic environment (10-week terms).
    • A superior level of English proficiency (for language proficiency criteria go to http://www.sil.org/lingualinks/languagelearning/otherresources/actflproficiencyguidelines/contents.htm
    • Ability to use technology such as Blackboard, Smartboard, audio streaming and other classroom technologies.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience living and/or working abroad (preferred)
