Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for a full-time College Counseling Writing Specialist for an extended year position beginning in early August and ending roughly in early July.

Responsibilities
The new College Counseling Writing Specialist will join a diverse team of colleagues who are energetic, creative, and collaborative, and who are launching a new college counseling model. Rather than the director and ideal candidate each having their own counseling load, they will share a diverse group of students, distributing the college counseling responsibilities between them. The ideal candidate will guide students in building their applications and writing college essays and will write the counselor recommendations for the group. The director will create college lists, manage students’ and families’ expectations, develop early strategies, and respond to questions and concerns from parents/guardians.

Based on feedback from schools using this model, joint counseling allows both counselors to refine their talents and specialize in different facets of the process, providing deep expertise in their respective areas. It also produces efficiencies, creating greater bandwidth for both counselors to complete the responsibilities of the position.

The specific responsibilities include:

  1. Counsel, support, and mentor a diverse group of students each year on building college applications and writing essays;
  2. Write individualized and unbiased recommendations for all counselees;
  3. Create and implement writing workshops to support students’ college essay writing process;
  4. Create a level of rapport, comfort, and an environment of trust with all students, including adapting their counseling practice, when necessary, to students’ varying cultural, financial and personal needs;
  5. Present with the team, sometimes on evenings and weekends, to students, families, teachers, and other constituents;
  6. Visit and expand Lakeside’s network with colleges and universities to learn about options for students and to further educate these institutions about Lakeside;
  7. Build a culture of inclusivity in the college process, including setting expectations for students on acting inclusively and equitably;
  8. Create dynamic communications and presentations for various Lakeside constituents.

The ideal candidate will be someone who embraces change and who will be eager to partner with the team to implement the joint counseling model. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be eager to work with the team in ensuring that all office policies, practices, and procedures are antiracist.

Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s preferred. Successful candidates will have three or more years of relevant experience in teaching and coaching writing and will possess their own outstanding writing skills. Experience in selective college admissions or college counseling is preferred, but not required. They will also possess excellent skills in listening, counseling, public speaking, creativity, and technology. Successful candidates will have experience working with a diverse student population and demonstrate an equity and inclusion mindset: they should be aware of their own identity and biases, consider how privilege impacts the college process, possess an interest in learning about the unique stories of all students, and consider how students’ educational experiences vary according to racial, cultural, and financial backgrounds. Strong organizational and time management skills are required. Successful candidates must be able to work some evenings and weekends to support college counseling programs and to travel to colleges (though counselors make use of “flex time” to account for their evening and weekend work). Finally, candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal history background checks.
