Position Summary

Through written and visual media, the Senior Writer provides high-level content that supports Sac State's mission and presents University achievements in a way that enhances its standing and reputation in the communities it serves. Produces engaging, compelling and accurate content for all available platforms; develops and utilizes campus and other story/news sources to find and provide information for stories.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation under the Fair Labor Standards Act)

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,515 - $6,358 per month

Hiring Range: $3,515 - $6,358 per month

Salary Grade/Range: 2

Pay Plan: 12 month

Work Hours:

Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ability to work some evenings and/or weekends, occasionally at off-site locations, as needed.

Department Information

The Office of University Communications works to raise awareness and tell the Sac State story on campus, in the region, and beyond. In support of the University's strategic priorities, we partner with campus colleagues to showcase academic success, inclusive excellence, and robust community engagement via a wide range of communication platforms. We oversee news and media relations, crisis communications, social media and multimedia, marketing and branding, and strategic publications.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

  1. Experience writing/editing for print and digital platforms.
  2. Experience writing and posting social media entries.
  3. Experience in a newsroom setting.
  4. Knowledge of news and communications ethics.

  • Excellent communication and editorial skills, with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling and composition.
  • Ability to write news/feature stories and other communications as assigned.
  • Ability to shoot publication-level video.
  • Ability to manage and execute multiple daily, weekly, and long-term tasks.
  • Ability to adapt and exhibit flexibility when facing changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press editorial style.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders and diverse sources and constituents; demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence, diversity, and collaborative partnership.
