Research Specialist

Position Summary:
Performs research activities and data analysis. Records observations and measurements and reports results. Participates in analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision.
This is an entry-level professional position responsible for performing a mix of routine and non-routine tasks in support of research led by others. Work is specifically focused on conducting SARS-CoV-2 analysis on wastewater samples received from state and regional Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WWTFs). Samples will be received and processed three times weekly from up to 10 WWTFs. Investigations require mastery of methods, equipment, and instruments required for wastewater analyses, including but not limited to molecular and chemical analyses.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience following pre-established laboratory procedures and protocols in a consistent and documented manner.
- Experience working in a microbiology or molecular biology lab
- Analyzing scientific data
- Keeping complete and accurate records
- Working in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Post-baccalaureate experience working in a molecular biology laboratory and with wastewater samples.
- Experience receiving, processing, and tracking large numbers of samples and reporting results on a regular basis.
- Experience working in a BSL2 environment, and familiarity with BSL2 protocols.
- Experience performing RT-qPCR and related analytical methods.
- Knowledge and experience applying statistical methods to describe analytical results.
- Experience processing wastewater samples for recovery and analysis of RNA and DNA.
- Experience performing quantitative PCR on complex biological matrices, including wastewater samples.
- Knowledge on protocols for detecting and quantifying SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Ability to be stationary for an extended period in a laboratory setting and also able to move about the lab when needed. Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move up to 50 lbs.
