Job Purpose

The Associate Director of Honors College Admissions develops and manages the recruitment strategy for academically talented students to the College of Charleston. Position serves as the primary point person for admissions in the Honors College and works to identify prospects, encourages their application, and reviews their application materials for membership eligibility to our top scholar program, the Charleston Fellows. In consultation with the Dean of the Honors College, manages the Honors College admissions review process ensuring that the Honors College and the Division of Enrollment Planning (including the Offices of Admissions and Financial Aid) work collaboratively for the best possible results in recruiting and retaining new Honors College students each year that align with enrollment goals. Travels to key geographic areas to meet with prospective students and their parents and college counselors to spur interest in attending the College of Charleston and the Honors College. Coordinates the work of Admissions, Financial Aid, the Honors College and academic programs to determine eligibility and programmatic fit in strategic areas.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required. Strong preference for master’s degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in recruitment, yield and admissions as well as supervisory experience. Priority given to persons with previous higher education experience. Experience with top scholarship programs is also an asset. Strong writing and oral communication skills essential. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to cultivate relationships with key audiences of prospective students. Ability to work with a diverse student population is necessary. Understanding of best practices in recruitment, yield, admissions, and merit scholarship funding. Ability to implement effective oral, written, and electronic communication. Exceptional computer operation skills, including Microsoft Office, Salesforce or a similar CRM. Ability to train/manage staff on admission policies and coordinate the implementation of multiple projects in accordance with established schedules/goals. Must possess independent judgment and initiative, have knowledge of higher education policies and be able to multi-task and prioritize during key admissions cycle periods. Excellent writing, organization, and time management skills and the ability to create reports and analyze data to make actionable plans to achieve Honors enrollment targets. Budget management experience is desirable.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Generally, the position is a 37.5-hour per week job; however, must have flexibility to travel in and out of state for recruitment and yield purposes and may be required to work extra hours on the weekends and evenings during peak times (e.g. Open Houses, Accepted Student weekend, Admissions Fairs).

Develop, plan and lead recruitment and yield events for Honors College prospective students, both on-campus and off-campus. Represent the College of Charleston and the Honors College to prospective students, their families, and school officials. Coordinate on-campus events and off-campus travel with Office of Admissions and the Honors College. Conduct Honors College information sessions and meet with prospective students and their families on campus or virtually. Travel to targeted schools to meet prospective students and high school guidance counselors. Manage daily communication with prospective Honors College students and other strategic recruits for the College of Charleston. Collaborate with the Honors Staff and University Marketing to develop targeting Honors messaging, marketing materials and strategies for prospective students and provide information to admissions counselors about Honors admissions practices, deadlines and goals. Manage undergraduate volunteers in the Honors Ambassadors Program.

Activity

Manage Honors College admissions process in collaboration with the Honors College Dean and the Office of Admissions, including overseeing the processing and evaluation of applications, ensuring accurate data entry and statistical reporting, conducting application review, and developing enrollment management strategies. Work with Admissions Operations to provide necessary training for Honors College application evaluation. Coordinate with office staff in the Honors College to ensure that all application materials for the Honors College are properly processed. Works with the Dean of Admissions to ensure timely decisions for applicants to the Honors College.

Activity

Coordinate the award process between the Office of Admissions, Office of Financial Aid, the Honors College and various academic units for our top scholars program, the Charleston Fellows. In collaboration with the Honors College Dean’s Office, plan and manage the annual Honors College Scholarship Weekend. Ensure that Honors College scholarship awards are announced in a timely fashion and in coordination with key dates in the Admissions timeline. Manages the Honors College scholarship decision process by 1) Overseeing the selection of students invited to the scholarship interview weekend, 2) planning and coordinating the scholarship interview weekend, 3) collaborating with the Dean to build scholarship interview teams and compiling evaluation data from the interview teams, 4) coordinating decisions about scholarship recipients, 5) overseeing preparation of scholarship packets, and 5) overseeing the tracking of candidate decisions. Collaborates with Dean to ensure that scholarship databases are maintained and coordinates with Senior Development Officer for the Honors College to ensure that scholarship donors are properly stewarded.

Maintains an “insider’s knowledge” of the Honors College and serves as an integral member of the Honors College management team. Attends staff meetings and retreats. Contributes to strategic planning, budget management, and program development initiatives as requested. Participates in planning and implementation of key events and core activities in the Honors College. Serves as Honors College representative on the Recruitment Action Council.
