Associate Director for Graduate Professional and Career Development

 

The George Mason University, Office of the Provost invites applications for an Associate Director for Graduate Professional and Career Development. About the Position:

The Graduate Division elevates Mason graduate education by augmenting the work of the academic units, by increasing the impact of graduate students and programs, by fostering a collaborative culture of academic excellence, and by contributing to the research productivity and the workforce development appropriate to an R1 institution.

As a member of the Graduate Division’s team, the Associate Director for Graduate Professional and Career Development manages central professional and career development for graduate students as well as post-doctoral and Master of Fine Arts fellows. The Associate Director will organize and coordinate efforts to develop and implement a sustainable structure of support towards students’ and fellows’ professional competencies and career readiness. The design and execution of this initiative will involve a close collaboration with central offices, and academic units and their respective faculty and staff members.

Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Director for Graduate Professional and Career Development will be responsible for:
    Assessing existing programs and services focused on graduate professional and career development and working with a variety of academic units, disciplines, and offices across the University to coordinate offerings in relation to the needs of students and fellows;
  • Guiding the collection and analysis of data on experiences and career outcomes for students and fellows across the University;
  • Leading the development and implementation of new programs and opportunities in support of students’ and fellows’ educational, professional and career needs and goals;
  • Creating a model that helps students and fellows identify and sequence intentional and progressive professional development experiences that align with their goals;
  • Developing, implementing, and managing the programming of multi-career preparation for doctoral students within and beyond the academy;
  • Designing, implementing, and managing a program to effectively connect students and fellows to identified external professional and career development resources and opportunities;
  • Organizing and presenting regular seminars, workshops, and other events designed to support career and professional development;
  • Creating and continually enhance the content for web-based resources on graduate professional and career development for students, fellows, and other graduate stakeholders;
  • Developing and maintaining a communication plan for the newly developed programs that ensure timely and accurate delivery of information, news, and events; and
  • Adhering to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University’s mission for graduate student academic success.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and significant related experience (typically 5+ years) in higher education by time of hire or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Relevant experience in program design and/or management for professional and career development in a higher education setting;
  • Demonstrated desire to work with graduate students, post-doctoral and MFA fellows, faculty and administrators from a wide range of disciplines and schools; and
  • Understanding of unique professional and career development needs of graduate students and post-doctoral and MFA fellows of diverse backgrounds, interests, and disciplines and best practices for fostering a campus-wide culture of graduate student professional and career development.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree and significant related experience (typically 5+ years) in higher education by time of hire;
  • Relevant experience in professional and career development at the graduate and post-graduate level; and
  • Ability to utilize systems and technology to collect, analyze, and report data.

 

Additional desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience developing and implementing strategic and impactful initiatives;
  • Excellent project management skills with experience managing multiple, simultaneous workstreams;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication (e.g., presentation to a variety of audiences) and interpersonal skills;
  • Proven proficiency with computers including software systems and applications (e.g., databases, analysis);
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple priorities;
  • Ability to develop and utilize tools and processes to collect, analyze, and report data;
  • Ability to work well in a diverse environment;
  • Ability to think critically, make independent decisions, and take initiative as appropriate;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team environment; and
  • Demonstrate high level of organizational skills as required for specific position.
