Université de Montréal (UdeM) is currently looking for its next Dean of the Faculty of Education.

UdeM is actively engaged in social development through its tripartite mission of teaching, research, and community service. Alongside its affiliate schools, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal, UdeM is the leading center of higher education in Quebec and one of the most important in Canada. Though its roots are local to Montreal, its calling is international—UdeM is among the top research universities globally, and is considered one of the most important in the French-speaking world. It is ranked 88th worldwide by the prestigious Times Higher Education and is in the first percentile in all international rankings of the best universities.

Candidate profile for the post of Dean of the Faculty of Education

Following consultations, it has been determined that in order to fulfill a mandate that is at once resolutely external in orientation, and that will ensure the continuity of recent internal transformations, the candidate should:

  • Come from the educational sphere; possess a solid understanding of educational contexts in Quebec (and Montreal in particular), and of the specific characteristics of faculties providing career-track degrees; have professional experience related to the areas of teaching and educational studies; demonstrate an awareness of pedagogical and scientific activities.
  • Have an understanding of the political workings, the institutional culture, and the challenges tied to a university career in order to ensure efficient faculty management; have a record of successful experience in management, departmental leadership, or program leadership, and possess capacities related to the planning and management of human resources and finances.
  • Demonstrate collaborative, shared leadership that enables a mobilization of the faculty community around unifying projects; be proactive, dynamic, and entrepreneurial; promote community-based management and remain open, attentive, and empathetic.
  • Possess political and communication skills; be capable of providing the highest quality of representation (as needed) and public defence of the faculty’s mission.
  • Demonstrate managerial courage, a tolerance for risk, diplomacy, and firmness, all within a faculty position; be loyal to the institution and the deanship, make decisions as a team, and remain united.
  • Possess both credibility and stature, have a solid network of diverse contacts within the educational system; be recognized by the university community; be capable of developing an influential network that will enable the faculty to access the resources necessary to succeed in its various mandates; know how to realize benefit from opportunities.
  • Have a proven record of integrity and probity; act with transparency and honesty; be equitable and just.
