Albany, NY

The State University of New York (SUNY) seeks a transformative leader to lead the largest public higher education system in the country with a commitment to providing the highest quality postsecondary education, with the broadest access, to all segments of the population. This leadership includes supporting the enhancement of research and SUNY’s partnerships and contributions to the civic and economic well-being of the State of New York. Key to this position is a Chancellor who can and will interact with policy leaders throughout the state and can create an inclusive environment that enables the system to meet these goals. SUNY seeks a Chancellor who understands that this position, because of the system’s size and breadth of institutional offerings, provides an unprecedented opportunity to be a catalyst in revitalizing higher education not only in New York State and the nation, but across the globe. The system, which includes AAU institutions, other major research institutions, academic medical centers, comprehensive universities, technical colleges as well as community colleges, draws students with the promise of a high-quality, accessible, and affordable college education.

SUNY has benefitted from longstanding New York State financial investment and has an all-funds budget in excess of $14 billion to support the operations of its 64 campuses. New York State has reaffirmed its commitment to SUNY, including significant new financial support and ambitious goals to secure SUNY’s place as a global leader in higher education. The next Chancellor will be in a position to implement these goals and aspirations and lead in all aspects of higher education, including student access, lifelong learning, and participating in providing solutions to major issues of the national and global communities.

The Chancellor is head of the SUNY system, reporting to the 18-member Board of Trustees. The SUNY Board of Trustees requires a visionary leader able to harness the collective energies of the SUNY institutions, recognize the individual potential of each campus, transform education to match a rapidly changing society, and strategically build areas of excellence across the system. The Chancellor, working with over 500 professionals in the system’s central administration, as well as campus leadership across the state, will develop and execute a bold strategic plan to reimagine SUNY and contribute toward propelling New York to become the world’s leader in innovation, equitable economic growth, and upward mobility that delivers on SUNY’s goals for the future.

As the chief strategist and spokesperson for the SUNY system, the Chancellor will forge strong relationships with elected leaders, government agencies, foundations, and the private sector to develop partnership opportunities for the benefit of SUNY students and faculty. The Chancellor empowers campus leaders and celebrates the distinctiveness of their campuses while also identifying opportunities for common goals, shared services, and cooperation among the individual institutions as SUNY increases its national and global prominence.

A search committee reflecting the larger SUNY community as well as distinguished civic leaders will review applications, screen candidates, and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for the selection of the next Chancellor. Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, has been engaged to assist with this important search. Nominations, inquiries, and applications should be sent in confidence via
