AUIS is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational, English-speaking university founded in 2007 for the public benefit and located in Sulaimani, the cultural capital of the Kurdistan region in Iraq and a UNESCO-designated City of Literature.
The University’s expansive marble-and-glass campus has 50 classrooms, high-tech computer labs, library, auditoriums, dining facilities, and sports facilities. Our 1,300 students are taught in English Approximately 30% of full-time faculty are from the United States, another 30% from Iraq, and the balance from more than 20 other countries. The University’s acclaimed preparatory program is the only such program in Iraq to have earned U.S. accreditation (CEA). POSITION DESCRIPTION
AUIS invites applications for the position of University Librarian. The modern, windowed University Moulakis Library has an excellent collection of textbooks, reference works and general reading, with study areas and online access to periodicals and other research resources. Substantial growth is planned over the next five years in library facilities and capabilities, with curatorial collections in Arabic and Kurdish (Sorani) as well as in English. Reporting to the VPAA, the successful candidate will demonstrate broad experience, skills and initiative in managing and developing library resources in a liberal arts university, helping to instill a love of reading and learning among students and the broader community. The Moulakis Library is undertaking the same evolution in library function as other libraries around the world, and offers enormous scope for creativity and innovation in addressing projected future needs of student learning and faculty research. Opportunities for part-time teaching may be available for candidates with appropriate education, experience and interest.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate exhibits the following characteristics:
- Masters degree in Library Science or comparable degree, or three or more years of experience in library management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Kurdish or Arabic language skills are desirable.
- Strong IT skills, including good working knowledge of online learning and research capabilities, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office, etc.
- Good knowledge of KOHA or other library services platform.
- Cross-cultural sensitivity obtained from living in more than one country is highly desirable.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Library management and planning
- Acquiring, cataloguing and processing library resources
- Developing increased access to online resources
- Managing facilities and equipment
- Supervising staff and student assistants
COMPENSATION
The compensation package is competitive and includes base salary, subsidized housing, annual airfare, subsidized health insurance, a generous holiday and leave policy, opportunities for consulting, and other elements.
