Special Information

  • Applicants without a current law enforcement certification and currently certified police officers (laterals) will both be considered for this position. Preference may be given to lateral applicants.

  • The Law Enforcement-Frontline National Test must be completed through the National Testing Network (NTN).   • Testing dates are currently tentative but are expected to take place in February/ beginning of March. Selected applicants would attend an academy date of May and July 2022.
    • In order to be considered for your designated test and corresponding academy slot, you must have your NAU application submitted and The Law Enforcement-Frontline National Test (NTN) completed.
    • Additional testing opportunities will be available for applicants beyond the first testing dates and will be considered for future academy dates.
    • Start dates for selected lateral applicants will be determined based on background investigation requirements and field training program scheduling.


Job Description

Northern Arizona University Police Department is recruiting two (2) Police Officers. NAU Police Officers patrol assigned area to detect and deter criminal or suspicious activity as well as investigate accidents and crimes and writes detailed daily reports to document incidents on campus. The NAU PD provides professional, courteous and effective service to all campus members, including students and university guests. Investigates complaints and works to resolve conflicts both on campus and concerning the campus community.

Essential Physical Requirements
  • Able to drag objects up to 165 pounds.
  • Able to pass a physical abilities test.

Enforcement of local, state, and federal laws - 30%
  • Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or by motorized vehicle to control traffic, prevent or deter crime and arrest violators; issues warnings or citations to drivers when violations of motor vehicle laws are observed; enforces Federal and State laws as well as University rules.
  • Gathers and analyzes requirements for additions or modifications to university law enforcement services and makes recommendations to department management.

Response and Investigation of crimes and accidents - 30%
  • Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service; makes decisions based on analysis of situation and facts.
  • Responds to public service calls such as delivering emergency messages, motorist assists, animal complaints, civil complaints, domestic disturbances.
  • Investigates reports of missing persons, identifies areas of potential crimes or unsafe conditions; reports conditions and takes corrective actions.
  • Investigates all types of crimes and accidents; performs follow-up duties on crimes/accidents as directed by supervisor; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and facts; files appropriate reports as directed by federal, state, or local legal requirements.

Administrative duties and training -20%
  • Prepares detailed written reports of crimes, accidents, and incidents.
  • Serves warrants, subpoenas or other court processes as necessary.
  • Trains sworn and non-sworn personnel on departmental policies, procedures and activities.
  • Compiles daily reports on law enforcement activities for department management.

Department Representation - 15%
  • Works with the university residents/community and other outside public agencies to solve residential/university concerns.
  • Makes oral presentations to citizen groups on crime prevention/public safety issues.
  • Answers questions regarding campus law enforcement

Other duties as assigned - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED Experience Credentials
  • Current AZPOST certification in good standing, or ability to obtain after successful completion of police academy or through waiver process.
  • 21 years of age upon completion of academy, US citizen, meet AZPOST standards, and possess current AZ Driver's License.

  • Knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures.
  • Skill in analytical, objective observation of situations and quick decision making.
  • Maintain proficiency in law enforcement equipment.
  • Maintain ability to perform to physical requirements of the job.
  • Skill in managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Skill in the accurate and complete recording of information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in verbal and written formats.
  • Skill in keyboarding and the operation of a personal compute.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range is $51,000-$53,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
