Job Description:

The position will be responsible for serving as a writer for York College Magazine and additional projects, (e.g., campaign communication projects, contributing news and features), as assigned. The Writer position will write and edit digital content to meet deadlines, including last-minute news, features, spotlights/profiles, and copy for pages that represent York College's programs, services, and people, ensuring quality, consistency, and accuracy. The position will work closely with colleagues in the Communications team and other YCP departments to complete writing and communications assignments for varied audiences including alumni, donors, and the campus community. The position will copyedit, fact-check, and proofread material as assigned.


Requirements:

The candidate should have a bachelor's degree in a related field (i.e., communications, journalism, English) and one to three years of relevant writing experience. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate exemplary writing and reporting skills, adaptable for a range of purposes, including, but not limited to, media, internal communication, magazine, Web, marketing, and fundraising.

The candidate should have excellent proofreading and copyediting skills; the ability to communicate effectively and creatively, both verbally and in writing; thorough knowledge of English language, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage. The candidate should have a thorough knowledge of AP Style; able to learn and apply the York College Style Guide to appropriate writing. The candidate should also have the ability to manage large-scope projects.

The candidate should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the College's leaders as well as students, faculty, staff, donors, alumni, and the general public, in part to conduct effective interviews for stories. The candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to establish and meet deadlines, and to work effectively with a team and in an independent manner. The candidate should also possess knowledge of technology such as Workzone and PhotoShelter.
