The Internal Communications Manager will support American University’s internal and community engagement through a wide range of communications and administrative duties. Primary responsibilities include supporting the AVP Community and Internal Communications with initiatives and projects that organize and deploy communications efforts across the university. Manage incoming requests from the student media organizations, work with university leaders to provide comment/interviews as appropriate and organize briefings on major topics. Provide support for university events on campus/remote, among other tasks. In addition, the incumbent will handle a variety of administrative tasks to support the overall operating function of University Communications and Marketing (UCM) and the internal communications priorities.

Essential Functions
  1. Coordinate internal communications efforts on behalf of UCM, specifically internal communications working group and tracking and planning mechanisms.
  2. Assist with production and writing of university internal communications vehicles, including community messages from university leaders or departments. Responsible for sending internal community messages through EMMA or other email communication tool.
  3. Provide support on emergency communications processes and protocols. Coordinate on issues management across the university, while working with key stakeholders, including the digital team. Monitor social media engagement across platforms.
  4. Assist with university-wide communications efforts for key priorities such as theChangemakersstrategic plan, Inclusive Excellence, Sustainability, Research Promotion, etc. Work collaboratively with UCM and university colleagues to develop timelines, supporting materials (e.g., website content, reports, etc.), and events for roll outs and announcements.
  5. Collaborate with the university Government and Community Relations team to support neighborhood and DC issues and engagements, including community relations newsletters, as appropriate.
  6. Manage the tracking (e.g. internal media requests), measurement (e.g., open rates/actions on community messages) and planning (e.g. timing of announcements and content) of internal communications vehicles.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Desired candidate has strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; is flexible and embraces working across teams.
  • The ability to multi-task and meets deadlines while communicating is essential.
  • Creativity is strongly encouraged.
  • Must be a team-player, pro-active and have a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office suite and across social media platforms is required.
  • Working knowledge of internal communications, public affairs, and familiarity with higher education desired.
