Center for Innovation- Business Manager

Position Summary

Fort Lewis College is seeking a Business Manager to lead its business school’s Center for Innovation (C4I). The goal of the Innovation Center is to offer resources and mentoring to help creatively solve business problems and better the community, serving aspiring business leaders and students alike. Reporting to the Dean of the Business School, the Center for Innovation Business Manager will administer the business affairs of C4I, engage university leaders, staff, students, and alumni, in addition to local businesses in the growth and development of the center.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five or more years of position-related experience, including:
  • Significant innovation and entrepreneurial experience. This could include substantial innovation activity within an existing entity in any sector or experience with a for-profit or non-profit organization.
  • A robust knowledge of the business community and connections with leaders across economic development, business development, and entrepreneurial development groups in the 4 Corners Region.
  • One or more years of budgeting experience at an organization
  • Ability to engage students with a wide variety of interests from across the university and to create an inclusive community for students from all backgrounds.
  • Ability to interact comfortably with diverse constituents, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, La Plata County community members, and leaders of business, government, and non-profit institutions.
  • The ideal candidate will be able to lead without requiring the spotlight, and exert influence without formal authority
  • Two or more years’ experience managing staff or interns.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to bring new technologies to the center and find appropriate uses for the technologies (workshops, rented out to members, etc.) as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in business or equivalent degree or experience
  • Experience managing and motivating teams
  • Experience working at a college or university
  • Two or more years’ experience working with local businesses and knowledge on local barriers and challenges to entrepreneurship preferred.
  • Significant innovation and entrepreneurial experience. This could include substantial innovation activity within an existing entity in any sector or experience with a for-profit or non-profit organization.
  • Flexibility, curiosity, and willingness to experiment.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop event ideas, plan events, find sponsorships, and partnerships.
Major Responsibilities
  • Work with advisory board and the Dean of the Business School to shape C4I’s vision, goals, and strategies.
  • Develop events and other community engagement opportunities to showcase the C4I and bring in revenue for the space
  • Create, coordinate, and oversee formal and informal programming about innovative thinking and entrepreneurship. Encourage and cultivate a culture of innovation, collaboration, experimentation, and resilience.
  • Thoughtfully engage the broader Fort Lewis College community, including faculty, staff, and alumni. Recruit and manage a robust network of mentors.
  • Engage students from a wide variety of backgrounds, interests, and experiences.
  • Develop partnership with schools, businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations across the community, including those with an existing entrepreneurship focus. Develop strategies for collaboration with the community at large.
  • Hire additional staff as needed.
  • Find creative ways to measure program outcomes and the impact of the C4I. Use qualitative and quantitative feedback to innovate and improve the C4I.
  • Address any conflicts between members of the space and help to manage and improve co-use of the center.
  • Help raise funds to make the C4I sustainable through memberships, sponsorships, and grants.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
  • Manage Proximity, the platform used to manage the C4I’s coworking and rental spaces.
  • Recruit, supervise, educate, train, support and retain Center interns to take part in the C4I’s efforts; enable them to explore their personal ethics/values, develop a sense of belonging, and gain professional skills.
  • Oversee management of C4I’s website, newsletter, social media, event calendar and other outreach and promotion avenues
  • Explore and secure new sources of revenue where appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508. 
  • Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.

Compensation

The salary range is $55,000 to $61,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
