Established in 1887 as a school for the education of American
Indians, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke serves a

The position will provide direction and leadership to academic
Service-Learning programs and assist the Director of the Office for
Community & Civic Engagement to design implement and assess
service programs, educational activities and events that embody the
value of volunteerism, service and responsible citizenship. The
position will be responsible to develop and maintain relationships
with community agencies in a nine county region; to assist faculty
in the development and incorporation of service-learning
curriculum; and engage students through service opportunities. This
position will plan and develop curriculum for programs, special
events, workshops and seminars that provide education on academic
service-learning and community engagement.
The Associate Director for Service-Learning will provide leadership
and operational oversight in the development and implementation of
academic service-learning and community-based service
opportunities, volunteerism, advocacy, and research.
Responsibilities include providing overall administrative direction
for academic service-learning and integrating community service
opportunities with the academic mission of UNCP; serving as
senior advisor for Service-Learning Advisory Committee in
determining service-learning curriculum; hiring and supervising
service-learning teaching assistants; facilitating faculty
development opportunities; seeking external funding to support
creative endeavors; advising and conducting educational development
on, civic responsibility and civic engagement competencies for
faculty, staff and students; coordinating risk management and
evaluation activities related to service-learning; furthering
institutionalization of processes and infrastructure for academic
service-learning at UNCP; and developing and maintaining
relationships with community agencies in a nine county
region.
The person in this position must be able to work closely with
university faculty and executive staff of community organization to
develop collaborative opportunities that advance curriculum
implementation of theory to practice; plan, develop, implement and
assess effectiveness of programs, workshops and seminars that
provide educational awareness through experiential learning and
civic engagement; provide academic advisement and conduct student
education development on community and civic engagement; collect,
maintain and manage data, conduct assessments and report learning
outcomes on program effectiveness; conduct and present research in
the areas of service-learning, civic engagement, and community
development that will provide best practices to cooperatively
engage students, faculty and community in collaborative learning
projects.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: Candidates must possess an earned Master’s Degree in Student Service, Higher Education, Counseling or a related field. Must have excellent communication skills and applicable computer skills including Microsoft Office. Must have excellent managerial and interpersonal skills and experience, establishing effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and the local community. The ability to plan and assess programs and write grants is key.
Management Preferences: Candidate should have experience supervising students and working directly with faculty.
