Summary of Job Duties:The Server Administrator has the primary responsibility for overseeing the daily operation of University servers along with the maintenance functions for those systems. This position will report to the Manager of IT Infrastructure.

Qualifications:

Education and Work Experience:
  • Minimum qualifications include a four-year degree in an IT related field and 3+ years working in Windows and/or Linux server administration in an Active Directory environment. Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements upon approval.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve server and server application related problems, as well as monitor, update, and complete Server related tasks assigned through Service Now. This occurs on a daily basis.
  • Research, plan, test, and implement changes to systems including new software applications, software upgrades, patches, firmware, and fixes according to the change management procedures and policies. This occurs weekly.
  • Install new or replacement servers and equipment, both physical and virtual, including OS and any applications needed. This occurs as needed.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all implemented server systems in areas of responsibility. This occurs as needed.
  • Provide backup to other Technology team members as assigned. This occurs as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. This occurs as needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work with UAFS management, vendors, and Technology Procurement Specialist to manage costs, plan purchases, and help with budgeting. This occurs as needed.
  • Search out training opportunities and attend pertinent educational sessions. This occurs as needed.
  • Work with University staff to develop solutions for short term and long-term projects. This occurs as needed.
  • Ensure that all information is available for equipment so that asset information can be entered into Service Now. This occurs as needed.
  • Evaluate current procedures and processes and provide recommendations for improvements. This occurs as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and to provide leadership for subordinates. This occurs daily.
  • Responsible for maintaining consistent on-time attendance. This occurs daily.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:
  • General knowledge of data network systems and Wide and Local area networking.
  • Ability to work well in group situations as a contributing team member.

  • Ability to research utilizing online sources and to network with other team members and off campus professionals.

  • Hands-on experience implementing and administrating network devices, setting and maintaining policies and rights/security within a Windows Server in an Active Directory environment
  • Experience with Windows 2008, 2012 operating systems and above
  • Experience working with server hardware and operating systems, server applications and Virtual Server technology (VMware)
  • Experience with Backup software and hardware
  • Experience with server administration for Anti-virus
  • Experience and working knowledge with an Active Directory environment
  • Demonstrable level of competence including:
    • A thorough understanding of the OSI network model, Ethernet, and TCP/IP networking
    • TCP/IP-based services, including DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, etc.
    • Common network monitoring and security utilities
    • Troubleshooting focused on determining hardware vs. software, hardware vs. firmware, software vs. operating system, network vs. application/systems, and patterned vs. non-repeatable problems
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Dependability – is consistently at work and on time, follows instructions, responds to management direction, and responds to management feedback to improve performance.
Additional Information:

Working Relationships:

The Server Administrator will work closely with other Technology team members to ensure that there is adequate personnel available to assist other Technology staff as needed. The Server Administrator will also work closely with university staff to ensure that needs of students, faculty and staff are met. In addition, the administrator will interact closely with vendors and other external professionals to maintain knowledge of current trends, equipment nearing end of life, future strategies for data networking and campus needs for server applications and services.

Special Job Dimensions:

Work performed primarily in an office setting. Some work performed in server rooms and network closets. Must be able to lift 20 lbs. routinely and up to 50 lbs occasionally. Travel occasionally required. Normal working schedule is 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with extended hours required outside of normal working hours for downtimes.

$45,000-$55,000/year
