POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks to fill two full-time continuous career track (clinical track) or permanent tenure track faculty positions in small animal emergency and critical care (ECC). The successful applicants will join a dedicated team focused on clinical teaching, clinical service and scholarship.  The positions are available immediately. The Department is open to novel position structures, including a less than full-time position to allow for private sector activities.  

The ECC service is currently staffed by 3 boarded criticalists, 4 ECC residents, 7 ECC specialty interns, technician supervisor (VTS-ECC), licensed veterinary technicians, veterinary technician assistants, and patient service coordinators. The unit’s strategic plan includes expansion of all levels of staffing to facilitate operation of parallel critical care and emergency services.  State-of-the-art equipment and facilities are currently available within the service and hospital and include the capability for high-flow oxygen therapy and long term mechanical ventilation, point-of-care ultrasound, multi-parameter monitoring system, in-house laboratories, thromboelastography (TEG), on-site blood bank, digital radiography, 3T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, computed tomography (CT), and electrodiagnostic equipment.  Endoscopy, bronchoscopy, laparoscopy, and arthroscopy are also available.  Our surgical facility is equipped with a full range of surgical equipment including an operating microscope, a stereotactic brain biopsy system, and a Nico Myraid for tumor resection. WSU is recognized nationally and internationally for transsphenoidal hypophysectomy and currently has an active Pituitary Surgical Team and provides a unique opportunity to care for these patients in our ICU. The physical rehabilitation facility is equipped with an underwater treadmill, electric muscle stimulator and therapeutic ultrasound and is under the supervision of a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner. In addition, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is the leading referral center in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest with over 20,000 patient visits per year as a regional tertiary care facility and provides the ECC service with a broad-based caseload.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The successful applicant will participate in clinical service for the VTH, clinical and didactic instruction of professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and potential graduate students (in direct support of the ECC residency program), and conduct collaborative or independent research/scholarship within the candidate’s area of interest.  Expectations for scholarship/research will be greater for a successful tenure track applicant, appropriate to rank. The successful applicant must be able to communicate effectively, work collegially, and collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or a related foreign equivalent degree (such as a BVSc), and be board-eligible by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) or board-certified before date of hire.  Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment and relevant ability to successfully advocate for diversity and values of diversity.

Considerations regarding rank and faculty track will be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate, as will division of time between teaching, clinical duty, and scholarly activity.

For Tenure Track consideration, candidates must demonstrate a significant record of scholarship. Applicants for an Assistant Professor position must demonstrate potential to establish and maintain an externally funded research program. Applicants for Associate Professor must have an active extramurally-funded research program with a record of peer-reviewed publications and national/international recognition.

Preferred qualifications for both career and tenure track applicants include a record of scholarly productivity consistent with the level of experience and appropriate to rank and track (Assistant or Associate/Career or Tenure), as evidenced by collaborative basic, clinical or applied research and publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, evidence of expertise in teaching, and commitment to provision of outstanding clinical service.
