College of Lake County is seeking a Laboratory Operations Manager to oversee our healthcare, biology, chemistry and horticulture labs! The Laboratory Operations Manager is responsible for the promotion and development of both strategic and operational matters relating to Health and Safety within the Division. The Laboratory Operations Manager will oversee operations on all 3 campuses (Grayslake, Waukegan and Vernon Hills).

The Laboratory Operations Manager serves to foster a positive safety culture within the Division to ensure that it meets its requirements, as defined by OSHA, EPA, state and local requirements, and College Policy.

The Laboratory Operations Manager supervises many of the lab specialists that work in the aforementioned programs and reports to the Dean of the Biological and Health Sciences Division.

The position has a core Monday through Friday daytime work schedule but will require some evenings and weekends to meet the program needs during the year.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences, Safety or related discipline and 2 years of relevant experience in an academic laboratory setting.
Master’s degree in any discipline and ability to acquire professional safety credentials in the first 12 months of getting hired.
An Associate’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience.

Experience managing/supervising employees and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Demonstrated excellent organizational abilities, and attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize while handling multiple tasks, ability to exercise judgment, handle confidential information and function with minimal supervision.

Reflect a positive, high-energy and professional demeanor.

Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Working knowledge of Microsoft office products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Ability to travel regularly and independently between the three College of Lake County campuses and the CLC district.

Valid drivers license.

Desired Qualifications:
Advanced degree in Safety related discipline.

Current professional safety credential through BCSP or ISHM (i.e. CSP, ASP, CSHM, ASHM).

Experience working in an academic laboratory environment.

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with expectations of flexing schedule at times to work evenings and weekends. Travel to Southlake and Lakeshore campuses will be required.

Summary of Essential Functions:
Department Operations and Procedures (50%)

Ensure compliance with Federal (OSHA, EPA), State (IOSHA, IEPA, IDOL), local regulations, College policy and recognized best practices as they relate to health and safety for the Divisional programs.

Maintain and retain safety related documentation for the Biological and Health Sciences Division.

Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant health and safety issues and best practices for laboratories in an academic setting.

Ensure all incidents and near misses are reported and documented as per College policy.

Ensure that all division laboratories are adequately equipped with the appropriate safety equipment.

Management and Supervision (15%)Supervise Laboratory Specialists.
Project Leadership (25%) Take an active role in creating and maintaining a positive and proactive safety climate in which individuals feel that safety has a high value and one in which they are clear about responsibilities and the safety objectives of the Division.
Develop and provide training to Division Faculty and staff regarding program specific safety and compliance issues.
Act as liaison between construction team and the Division Dean for construction projects impacting the Divisions educational spaces.
Other (10%) Serve as division representative on the College Safety Committee.

Provide middle school and high school outreach for the Division.

Other duties as assigned.
