Primary Function

The National English Honor Society ( NEHS ), for secondary students and faculty, is an outreach program of Sigma Tau Delta (ΣΤΔ), International English Honor Society (serving students at four-year colleges/universities). Both societies have their Central Offices associated with
NIU’s Department of English, and are registered not-for-profit 501©3 organizations. NEHS currently has over 1,000 chapters.
As its administrative leader, the NEHS Director reports directly to the ΣΤΔ Executive Director, and is responsible for independently applying specialized knowledge to develop, improve, and maintain NEHS’s national and international operations in the areas of chapter development, information dissemination, public relations, budget development, and marketing.
The individual in this position provides vision and central supervision of NEHS and is responsible for NEHS expansion in secondary schools throughout the country and abroad. They must work credibly, collaboratively, and as a peer with a wide range of constituencies, including secondary-school senior administrators and teachers, university faculty and staff, and thousands of students. They provide creative and innovative oversight of the Society and of support staff who assist with Society operations.
The NEHS Director has high-level responsibilities in selecting, planning for, and mentoring of the Society’s governing body (the NEHS Advisory Council, comprised of secondary school teachers), and also serves as a non-voting member on the ΣΤΔ Board of Directors.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

The person in this postion will be responsible for Chapter growth and development, developing and implementing strategies for attracting new national and international chapters, as well as cultivating an NEHS culture and community, They will exercise direct authority for ascertaining the needs of local Chapter Advisors and develop startegies to address those concerns.
They will also work with the ΣΤΔ Director of Social Media Strateies to implement a systematic plan for communicating with chapters using web and social media platforms. They also will develop, execute and oversee the development and production of publicity materials.
This person will also assist the ΣΤΔ Executive Director and the ΣΤΔ Director of Society Operations with the planning and execution of NEHS participation in the spring ΣΤΔ convention. They will also establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with the ΣΤΔ Board of Directors, the NEHS Advisory Council, and Central Office staff.
This person will prepare, execute, and monitor short and long-term NEHS budgets
Some travel is expected including travel the fall Sigma Tau Delta Board meeting and the spring annual convention

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, English-education, or a related, relevant field
  • Five (5) years of secondary school teaching and a broad working knowledge of current trends in secondary English language studies
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience

37.50 per week

$3,583.33-$5,000/monthly
