Job Summary:
The Director of Student Involvement provides visionary and strategic leadership, supervision, and management of a comprehensive student involvement program, which includes fraternity and sorority life, general student clubs and organizations oversight, volunteer services, and campus programming.

The Director collaborates with campus partners to inspire and cultivate a comprehensive student clubs and organizations program in accordance with The Furman Advantage, ensuring Furman students have opportunities for involvement, belonging, and leadership development.

The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Student Involvement and Engagement.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

Strategic Oversight and Supervision

Supports the vision, mission, and values of Furman University to create a vibrant campus in which students enjoy a broad experience within a close-knit community.

Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates two full-time professional staff; the Assistant Director for Student Organizations and the Coordinator of Volunteer Services. Strategic oversight for employee onboarding and credentialing and professional development specific to the department.

Collaborates with the Associate Dean of Student Involvement and Engagement and the Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness to develop and implement a comprehensive and integrated student involvement and recreation experience.

Develops and implements a strategic plan for a student organization program that aligns with The Furman Advantage (TFA) pillars: belongingness, health and wellbeing, student success, engaged learning, campus vibrancy/social life and the incorporation and expansion of tenets of Furman's diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) plan.

Supervises staff who are responsible for advising key student organizations (SGA, FUSAB, Heller, FPC); administering a comprehensive student organization advisor training program; providing campus-wide programs; and assisting with student organization transition workshops, leadership retreats, new member programs, community service and volunteering, and leadership awards.

Oversees department learning outcomes and assessment.

Fraternity and Sorority Life

Provides leadership and strategic oversight for chapter and council advising, policy development, program and workshop development, student organization support, and budget management. There are currently six national fraternities, seven national sororities and two NPHC organizations.

Serves as primary advisor to the Interfraternity Council (IFC); provides community support through one-on-one meetings with council officers and attendance at council meetings. Serves as secondary advisor to the Panhellenic Council (FPC). The Assistant Director is the primary advisor for the FPC.

Advises National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations; develops a plan to create and formally recognize a governing council for NPHC and other multicultural fraternities and sororities.

Advises IFC chapter presidents; provides guidance and support through regular one-on-one meetings.

Directs the coordination of formal and informal recruitment activities for IFC.

Works collaboratively with the Center for Inclusive Communities to support and grow underrepresented students' involvement in fraternity and sorority organizations by identifying expansion interests, recruitment strategies, and membership development opportunities. Tracks participation in fraternities and sororities by underrepresented students.

Communicates, interprets and enforces appropriate University policies. Provides guidance and support to chapters particularly in the areas of risk management, membership recruitment and education, community building, academic excellence, social justice, civic engagement, and personal leadership.

Administers a system for fraternity and sorority event registration and advises chapters on University risk management policies related to registered events.

Works with the Associate Dean of Student Involvement and Engagement to adjudicate violations of organization operational policies. Serves as liaison to the Assistant Dean for Student Conduct in the adjudication of conduct code violations by organizations.

Coordinates the annual Fraternity and Sorority Accreditation process.

Develops and coordinates leadership workshops and membership development activities as necessary; including risk management training, bystander intervention workshops, sober party monitor training, and leadership transition workshops.

Develops the curriculum for and implements a University-sponsored new member education program.

Serves as a liaison to Housing & Residence Life with regards to the operation of the Greek Village, a second-year residential experience. Collaborates with Housing & Residence Life to develop a sophomore leadership program that complements the residential experience.

Advises the Furman University chapter of Order of Omega.

Maintains accurate records of chapter officers, members and advisors; as well as records of scholarship, community service work, social events, and other pertinent statistics for Student Involvement and the Division of Student Life.

Serves as liaison to the University administration and the student organization community from fraternity and sorority organizations. Works closely with the Associate Dean to ensure the University community is aware of fraternity and sorority activities and that collaborative opportunities are developed across campus.

Serves as primary point of contact for chapter inter/national organizations, alumni corporations and chapter advisors.

General Administration

Provides fiscal oversight for all departmental operational expenditures. Responsible for overall budget generation and fiscal oversight.

Leads, supervises and has general oversight for the content and maintenance of student involvement, fraternity and sorority life, and other departmental websites.

Attends regional and national conferences to ensure professional competencies remain aligned with duties, to identify trends and needs to continuously improve programming and services for the campus community. Maintains volunteer activities with professional association(s), as appropriate and with supervisor approval.

Assists in the development of assessment plans, strategic thinking and planning, learning outcomes, and goals and objectives coordinated with the mission and vision statements of the University, the Division of Student Life, and the Office of Student Involvement and Inclusion.

Serves as on the Student Accountability Hearing Board as a conduct official.

Serves in the professional on-call rotation for Student Life.

Serves on University committees as assigned.

Completes performance review process with supervisor and employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life, and the University. Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Direct supervision of two full-time employees.

Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.

Spends time planning, scheduling, and assigning priorities of several ongoing assignments.

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.

Reports To: Associate Dean of Student Involvement and Engagement

Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Education/Skill Requirements:

Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or other related field required.

Minimum of five years of progressive professional experience within the student activities and organizations and/or fraternity and sorority life functional area.

Demonstrated knowledge of national trends/best practices in fraternity and sorority life.

Demonstrated significant supervisory, risk management, and budgetary management experience.

Excellent customer service skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, conflict resolution skills, leadership skills, and a strong work ethic required.

Must have the ability to prioritize tasks, meet realistic deadlines, and operate within specific budget restraints.

Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.
