This is a permanent full-time faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Pullman, WA. The position is tenure-track at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. Considerations regarding rank will be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate, as well as experience and outcomes related to extension, scholarly and teaching activity.   

RESPONSIBILITIES: The position is full time (12-months) and the successful candidate will have the following distribution of responsibilities:

Extension Activity (approximately 45%): The faculty member will actively engage in outreach and collaboration with agricultural animal producers and employees, industry stakeholders, government representatives, veterinary practitioners, and the statewide network of Extension educators. An important element of this position is programmatic development integrating research endeavors with outreach activities and outcome and impact assessments. Extension programs intersecting with the faculty member’s research will support on-going collaborative agricultural animal health research in the CVM and the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS). Outreach and associated assessments may be based on small and large group meetings throughout the region, on-farm programs, and development of new outreach media. The successful applicant will serve as an important liaison between agricultural animal industries and food animal veterinary professionals.

Scholarly Activity (approximately 40%): The faculty member will actively engage in scholarly pursuits in collaboration with other faculty in the CVM and CAHNRS, focusing on agricultural animal health research and field disease investigation. These pursuits include participation as a lead and collaborative scientist on projects within the priority areas intersecting food animal production, food systems, and society. These areas may include but are not restricted to safe food, antimicrobial resistance, food system assessments, and animal health and well-being. Extramural support is expected to be obtained for applied, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary research, preferably at the population level and in support of Extension programs. Engagement of professional and graduate students in research activities is anticipated as well. Applicants for an Assistant Professor position must demonstrate potential to establish and maintain an externally funded research program. Applicants for Associate Professor must have an active extramurally-funded research program with a record of peer-reviewed publications and national recognition.

 Graduate, Professional, and Undergraduate Education (approximately 10%): The faculty member will actively engage in the education and training mission of VCS and the CVM. This encompasses clinical instruction in the professional DVM program, graduate student training, and potential for instruction in the undergraduate curriculum. These activities are expected to be shared assignments and the level of involvement in these activities will depend on the instructional needs of the college.

Academic Service (5%): The faculty member will be expected to be active in the academic service arena, including but not limited to participation in service activities at the Departmental, College, University, discipline and national levels.  This could include service such as search committees, task forces, college or university committee service, manuscript and grant review, peer review of teaching, and conference development.

QUALIFICATIONS: A D.V.M. or equivalent degree and earned Ph.D. in population health, epidemiology or related field are required by the appointment start date. Preference will be given to the following:

  • A strong background in agricultural animal health with an emphasis on population health of production agricultural animals
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with veterinary practitioners and agricultural animal owners
  • A record of scholarship commensurate with rank
