The Department of American Indian Studies at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) invites applications for the Dr. Adolph L. Dial Distinguished Endowed Professorship in American Indian Studies (AIS). The Dr. Adolph L. Dial Professor will engage in research and foster the understanding of the American Indian cultures and communities of the southeastern United States. Additionally, the professor will develop AIS by adding additional studies, including online components. The value of the endowed position is currently $1.5 million.   Legislatively designated as North Carolina’s historically American Indian university, UNC Pembroke is situated in the Town of Pembroke of Robeson County, home of the Lumbee Tribe, the largest tribe east of the Mississippi. UNCP was founded in 1887 and has the distinct honor as the only four-year accredited public university in the United States established by American Indians for the education of American Indians. UNCP’s Department of American Indian Studies was established in 1972 by Dr. Adolph L. Dial as the first AIS department in the southeastern United States, and it remains the only freestanding AIS department in the Southeast. UNCP’s current American Indian student enrollment is 13%, with more than 30 tribes represented. For information about the university and department, visit www.uncp.edu.   This is a 12-month permanent position with a tenure appointment at the rank for full professor with a teaching load of no more than two courses per semester. The distinguished professor will receive annual discretionary funds of at least $25,000 to support the research and initiatives of this position. In addition to excellence in teaching, faculty are expected to mentor/advise students and engage in scholarship and professional service to the university, department, and community.   The preferred applicant will have research focusing on American Indians of the southeastern United States. Review of credentials will begin immediately. The position has an anticipated start date of August 2022 but is open until filled.
The Endowed Professor will chair the AIS Department and assist in the development of a robust online program in AIS and may teach undergraduate, upper-level, and/or graduate AIS courses in addition to engaging in research and scholarship. The Endowed Professor will also have an instrumental role in the development and growth of the Southeast American Indian Studies Program. The SAIS Program presently consists of the Museum of the Southeast American Indian and the American Indian Heritage Center, but eventually will incorporate AIS and have its own director. There should be evidence of the candidate’s commitment and dedication to Indigenous pedagogies and methodologies, commitment to collaborating with students, faculty, and staff, and demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities.  This individual is expected to establish and maintain positive involvement with the local Lumbee Tribe and other American Indian tribes throughout North Carolina. Qualified candidates will have an outstanding record of teaching, scholarship and service deserving of tenure. This record may include evidence of externally funded grants and research publications.     The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, part of the University of North Carolina system, is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. UNC Pembroke has a student population of 8,000 in various graduate, undergraduate, and professional programs. UNC Pembroke has grown rapidly in recent years and today is one of the most ethnically and racially diverse universities in the eastern United States.
