Job Summary

School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, Bhandawat Lab is looking for a Research Coordinator to manage and conduct federally funded projects. The Research Coordinator position has two roles. In the first role, the successful candidate supports the Principal Investigator and lab members in ongoing research projects and coordination of day to day project activities; coordinates routine activities of research studies including ordering and organizing supplies, data maintenance, project evaluation, meeting scheduling, and training new lab members; Adheres to study protocols, and applicable regulations. In the second role, the successful candidate with perform independent research as part of the lab’s overall goal to understand the fly brain. This research involves fly brain dissection, immunochemistry, functional imaging and behavioral experiments, and electrophysiology.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinates lab work, submits to laboratory for processing and follow-up results as necessary.
  • Directs the requisition, collection, labeling, storage, or shipment of specimens.
  • Handles ordering, lab organization and inventory management.
  • Maintains an up-to-date documentation of research activities as required.
  • Assists with recruiting new lab member and trains new members in basic lab techniques and project management.
  • Keeps Principal Investigator and Project Manager(s) informed of any unexpected events, or problems in a timely manner. Provides Principal Investigator and Project Manager(s) with weekly updates of study progress.
  • Calendar and website maintenance, as well as other administrative work. Keeps staff aware of scheduling changes.
  • Maintains Drosophila stock collection, make solutions, waste management, and order supplies. Performs dissections, immunochemistry and confocal imaging. Research, including genetic crosses in flies and performing behavioral experiments, brain dissections and functional imaging.
Required Qualifications

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, Biology or Equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

Non-Supervisory position with skill of where to use discretion, proficient, and ability to work independently. The position tends to be on the Management track if they so desire.

Preference of fully functional, seasoned professional who can Interpret less clearly-defined issues; identify problems and possible solutions and takes appropriate action to resolve. A fully qualified, seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of area of specialization; resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways.

Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Networks with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise.

Work is performed under general direction. The candidate is required to be able to determine objectives of assignment, plan, schedule and arrange own activities in meeting the objectives. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. May lead projects, including other team members and serve as mentor to more junior staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to details are highly valued for this position.
  • Previous research experience, in particular, experience with Neuroscience techniques such as immunochemistry, confocal imaging, basic genetic and molecular biology techniques.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with Drosophila.
