Bryn Athyn College invites applications for the Director of Residence Life
Position Summary
The Director of Residence Life is a full-time, exempt position. The position reports directly to the Dean of Students and is responsible for the overall management of residence hall life for up to 200 students, including facilities management, enforcement of student policies as they align with the religious mission of the college, promotion of an atmosphere of student living supportive of learning, and ensuring the health and welfare of the residents. Residence Life strives to build an inclusive residence hall community to promote success through implementing innovative programs and services that promote co-curricular engagement.
Specific Responsibilities & Essential Functions
- Supervise 20 undergraduate resident assistants (RAs) and 3 assistant resident managers (ARMs)
- Serve as a visible and accessible resource in the residence hall community for ARMs, RAs, and students
- Work to implement departmental goals and priorities, including student learning and development, as well as operations components in residence halls
- Recruit, select, train Ras and ARMs; provide leadership to staff in setting goals for the year; monitor work performance for accuracy and completeness in accordance with department and college goals and objectives; ensure staff compliance with established College and Federal policies and procedures
- Develop and implement in-staff training and development programs for RAs
- Evaluate the performance of Residence Life staff members on a regular basis and during the yearly departmental evaluation process
- Chair/co-chair and serve on departmental and divisional committees
- Serve as personal counseling resource for staff and students in support of roommate conflicts, personal crises, and other concerns; work in collaboration with the Dean of Students to support and follow up with students of concern
- Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful College community
- Develop a knowledge of campus and community resources to ensure timely and efficient referrals when appropriate
- Establish and maintain communication with resident students through individual outreach and community meetings; serve as a mediator/facilitator when necessary to provide resolutions for interpersonal conflicts between students
- Communicate, educate and follow up with residents on the Student Code of Conduct and responsible decision-making through student conduct meetings
- Maintain database for student conduct, crisis, and students of concern
- Communicate through duty reports, incident reports and e-mail notifications as needed
- Provide leadership for the execution and administration of department assessment efforts including student focus groups, staff focus groups, and internal and national benchmark surveys
- Attend, participate in, and help plan professional development sessions and training
- Work with RAs to assess student needs and interests; anticipate and promote educational, cultural, social, recreational, and service programs that are supportive to the residence community
- Maintain confidential student records, including communication logs
- Manage operational functions for residence halls such as key distribution and collection, damage assessment, reporting and billing, maintenance requests, and hall openings and closings; serve as facility manager for residence halls including conducting room checks, reporting and following up on housekeeping, maintenance and mover requests
- Maintain all appropriate departmental budgets
- Manage and coordinate room assignments and changes in the halls and communicate/resolve housing issues in accordance with established procedures
- Respond to all inquiries and concerns from students, staff, and parents related to the halls; assist in planning for summer renovations, making recommendations for the purchase of furnishings and equipment, recommending improvements of housekeeping services, and preventative maintenance and safety measures; proactively and reactively respond to unnecessary/unreasonable hall damages and vandalism
- Maintain effective working relationships with CPO, Security and Safety Department, Crisis Management Committee, Health and Wellness Center, as well as all other relevant areas
- Work with the above-named entities to respond to crisis situations in accordance with departmental and institutional emergency procedures; assume “on-call” responsibility for all residence halls on a scheduled basis (approx. 2-4 weeks per term).
- Serve as a Mandated Reporter under Title IX.
Line of Reports
The Director of Residence Life reports directly to the Dean of Students. The following
personnel report directly to the Director of Residence Life: Assistant Residence Managers, undergraduate Resident Assistants, Assistant Director of Residence Life and Multicultural Initiatives, and the Student Activities Coordinator.
The Director of Residence Life is responsible for managing and overseeing the growth and development of the Residence Life division by conducting timely performance evaluations as well as providing professional development and training as necessary.
Criteria & Qualifications
Requirements include 3-5 years of college residence life experience at a supervisory level and a bachelor’s degree in a related field. A relevant Master’s degree is preferred. This is a year-round position that requires the Director to live either in an apartment on campus or within 10 minutes of campus during the academic year. This position requires an individual who is highly collaborative, can interface effectively with the surrounding community, and also has the skills to make decisions independently in a fast-paced environment.
