Position Description

The University of Tennessee invites applications from all qualified individuals for a full-time (12-month) faculty appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine.  The position will be offered as a tenure- or clinical-track assistant or associate professor, dependent on the individual’s interests and qualifications, and will reside in the Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences.

The College is seeking a veterinary virologist who will teach in our professional DVM curriculum, contribute to diagnostic laboratory services, and conduct independent extramurally funded research in some aspect of virology, related infectious disease or immunology.  The successful candidate would also be encouraged to participate in multidisciplinary collaborative research efforts, which could include clinical applications, mechanistic studies, and other expanding areas of research in infectious disease/immunology here at the University of Tennessee.
The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

The College currently matriculates 85-90 DVM students per year, some of whom go on to obtain combined degrees in our intercollegiate Comparative and Experimental Medicine graduate program.  The department is home to diagnostic laboratories in virology, bacteriology, parasitology, pathology, immunology, etc. (https://vetmed.tennessee.edu/vmc/dls) providing services to the College’s Veterinary Medical Center and referring veterinarians across the country.  Faculty enjoy full access to University core facilities in advanced microscopy and ultrastructural imaging, DNA sequencing, and biological and small molecule mass spectrometry, among others.  Advanced computing and modeling expertise are available through the University, NIMBioS, and in conjunction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants must have: (1) a DVM (or equivalent degree) or relevant PhD; (2) experience in diagnostic veterinary virology; (3) a record of publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals documenting case-based and/or hypothesis driven research; (4) excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well with others in a collegial, team atmosphere.  Preference will be given to those with DVM (or equivalent) and PhD degrees, those who are board certified (or board eligible) in virology by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, a track record of research funding, and individuals with experience teaching in a veterinary college professional curriculum.

Application Instructions

For consideration, please apply and include: 1) letter of intent, including a concise (up to 3-page) statement of research, diagnostic, and teaching aspirations, 2) current curriculum vitae, and 3) names and contact information (including email addresses) of three professional references.
